Starter motors for core

A plea.

Please, only donate core units that you know for certain are for our cars, ie ones you have removed from engines yourself.

I have just supplied a starter motor to Trevor Price that I've had reconditioned which won't fit his Sprint as the bendix shroud is slightly too long; evidently it is from a different vehicle, it might be another Triumph such as a Stag, or it could be from any of the many marques that used the M100 unit.

I had a similar problem a few years ago when the member found the mounting plate end casting was a slightly different shape so again, it wouldn't fit.

We cannot assume because an M100 was in the boot when you bought the car that it belongs to the car; it may be in the boot because the previous owner experimented and found it didn't fit!

I'm now going to have to test fit the couple of dozen core units I have to an engine, rather than just picking the next two off the pile to send for reconditioning. Meanwhile, I have a reconditioned unit that I have no idea what its application is.

If you post a photo and the length of the shroud, i could check it against a Stag and a T 2000/2500.
I dont need one but it might identify it?

Hi Alun, I have what I reckon is an old Sprint starter here.
Its a 3-bolt fixing.
The numbers on it are...
Lucas 25648 H 38 75 (so mid Sept 1975 )
2M100 12V

Solenoid 38 75 Lucas 19 S
76993A12V ER

Front Casting is 5424(?)91720.

Do these numbers tie up with yours please ?
Any use for recon ?

Once they've been through commercial reconditioning, the case numbers are irrelevant as the components all get mixed up; all M100 have the same cylindrical case, just different end plates. Responsible reconditioners used to obliterate the numbers with Xs, but it rarely happens these days.

I think all I can do is offer units up to an engine to see if they fit or not. Fortunately I have a starterless block sitting in the lock up at the moment.

The front casting number is the same as the one I've had returned, I think the end 0 may be a D? I'll check against the others in the shed when it stops raining, the two i had in the house went for recon yesterday!

I have a starter from a 1500 Auto I'd be willing to donate to stock. One of the solenoid terminals has had the thread re-cut (metric I think) as the original thread was stripped. Would you still want it if this was the case?..

Thanks, yes. It may well get a new solenoid, so that wouldn't be a problem.
