Well sounds like I found the issue then, seeing as I've gone down the same route as you Steve, replacing nearly everything. I'm probably going to buy an alloy fuel tank, as the don't rot etc etc
And also Tony, having a look late last night carefully around the sender unit, there as bits around this, I've got a suspicion that your right, the previous owner who didn't put the O ring on the sender unit tried to seal it with silicone. Sometimes you really can't believe what people do with cars, as the grief this has caused me is unreal. As for the bowls I never looked as whenever the incident occurred for whatever reason I didn't have tools with me or was in a dangerous area to check or was too annoyed to tank a look, then you'd go to it when it had been recovered the next day and it'd start fine
Cheers
Steve

Hi Steve, You are sounding a lot happier now
Silicon is crap stuff on cars (and vans) as i found on the ford transit. I can only assume that as it was a builders van they had been using red diesel out of dirty cans...... and that is how it got there. Keep positive

Well I was so confident that I'd found the fault with the dolly I took it out last night for its first road test to my local TR Group meet, which this time of year starts at a time when headlights are needed to be turned on!! Went PERFECTLY!! I was grinning like a Cheshire cat. Then on the way home I gave it some stick, as before now I've never been able to do worried it might breakdown as it has done so many many times before. But no, it was perfect again. Even stopped at the petrol station and some guy said 'Whats ya car mate?' I said '1977 Triumph Dolomite', He said 'Nice car!!' Thanks everyone for your input with this, its taken time but I've finally got there. Now I can finally enjoy my dolly
Cheers

Re: '77 1850HL Absolutely baffled by this one
Glad you found it.
I recently bought a Stag and I had issues with it cutting out dead, the tacho died. I initially thought it was the coil. Then I thought it was the rotor arm. After about five breakdowns, always in the most inconvenient place, after replacing both of those, I finally thought it was fixed, having completed about 200 miles without reoccurrence.
It next cut out at 10pm when I was doing 70mph in lane 4 of the M25 near Clackett Lane. Which has no hard shoulder as they've turned it into a running lane. Oh s***. Having managed to ditch it just off the road I got it recovered. Faversham Classics (Stag specialist) eventually noticed that the wiring to the Lumenition was bad, the positive supply had just been shoved into the fuse box, and apparently this was coming loose randomly.
Having had the positive supply attached properly I've now completed 800 or so miles without reoccurrence. It's very disheartening when a hard to reproduce problem happens on a car you've just bought!

Well done Steve, I was wondering if you were going to sell the car. Glad it's all sorted.
Re: '77 1850HL Absolutely baffled by this one
50 mile round trip today, and a short 6 mile round trip a few days ago. No problems. Tried it under all circumstances, under load thrashing it cursing it, nothing but smiles. My dolly works, well happy, even went to a car show in the rain today
Cheers Everyone
