respray / trims

hi my 15oofwd is going in for a respray soon and the guy is rightly wanting to do a good job. he wants to take the chrome trims off around the rear window/boot plus the rain channel and the chrome trims that run along the doors under the window. he's also after taking the front and rear windows out/ i'm a bit worried he might damage the trims taking them off and then create a problem getting them back on. same with the windows. anybody got any advice please as to what they have done / would do? thanks

Hi "Wellskint" (love the username ), I've just had mine resprayed and took every trim off with no issues, apart from the guttering trim as it's got a vinyl roof and didn't see the need to remove it. We also removed all the glass too, I was equally as worried as you about the front and rear screens though, as all my glass is edged with the Reg No. The front and rear screens came out without issues too though, but if you're really concerned why not just cut out the rubber seal and pop the screens out then, that's what they were going to do if they were struggling with them - I'd imagine you'd be putting new rubbers seals in anyway - the front and rear seals I got were a really good fit.

The only chrome trim I can't comment on is the guttering one, and it does look the most fragile of them all.

It comes off easy enough, if I can get it off without destroying it, anyone can.

Except as people have said, the guttering trim, I think I have read stories about people destroying that when trying to remove it.

Yep, same here. I removed front and rear glass and all bright work except the gutter trim. I left the door windows in place - possibly a mistake as there is a little overspray on the quarter light rubbers. No problems putting the trims back, although the front screen was a bit of a bear. Got the professionals to do it in the end. The rear one I did myself and it went in dead easy.

All the trim comes off easily it you take care using plastic trim tools and take your time don't force it. well when I say ALL the trim you by now know the gutter trim is the elephant in the room.... but there is a little secret to getting it off. very carefully, very very carefully using a small old style bottle opener to prise the trim PARTILY off working along from the lower front and use a piece of cloth between the bottle opener and trim, work all the way along but DO NOT fully prise it off on the first pass you will need two passes to fully remove it.

when it comes to replacing the trims all the clips are available from Bresco.

About 30-40 minutes. I've removed a few sets over the years

Available, but not exact same as originals, so harder to fit.

Available, but not exact same as originals, so harder to fit.

And the rear door quarter light window seals are NOT available and can be a total PITA to get out intact.

Outer door weatherstrips are available for Dolomites from a lot of the usual suspects, but it's better to buy Spitfire ones from Fitchetts and cut them down to fit the Dolomite, as these have the correct profile and, most importantly, have the rebates in them for the clips, which makes fitting them about 50% easier.

As Carledo said Rear quarters are a PITA, however patience and care I took mine out a couple of weeks ago for the same reasons.
Remove the window and trim and the stainless window guide.
Turn the door over so you can place the quarter in a tray/ container. Fill container with warm water then gradually add hotter water leave to soak for 10-15 mins massage the edges as they get softer.
Turn door upright then using some gloves with rubber palms and fingers ease out from the top
The quarter should then detach and come out with the rubber still intact.
Worked for me and thanks to some advice from members. I thought I was going to have to mask up which would spoil the paint job.
