Dolomite 1300 water pump

#1 Post by Alan Davies »

Mine seems to be leaking from the base where the pump bolts to the engine. (Lower of the 3 bolts) Could be a leaking gasket, but as I know little about the car, I'm thinking just get a new pump - is there a recommended supplier? as I know quality varies so much nowadays. Thank you for your help.

I got one for the Herald 1300 from Moss on eBay that, I think, came from India - I assume the pump is the same, if the fan mounting/pulley might differ. It works fine, but it gets noisy when its warm.

I worried about it for ages, but nothing happened. So I went back to worrying about the noises from the rear end, the oil leaking out the engine, and the water coming in the hood.

The 16v Slant 4 engine is more fun than the 3.5 V8, because you mostly drive it on the upslope of the torque curve.

Any of the new pumps are variable quality. Some leak when fitted, some last less than year. Few seem to last several years.
There is a company who can recondition a pump for about the same as a new one. But they offer a Lifetime warranty.
There is a thread on the tssc forum with details several months ago, do will need a bit of searching.
Or try a new gasket first. Certainly keep the old pump.

I purchased one from Rimmer's about four years ago listed for 1300/1500 Dolomites. Fitted ok with new gasket of course but casting on the rim is thicker than the original so nuts only just cover the end of the studs. Not had any noises from it or leaks or any other issues, seems to be doing what its supposed to do.

Thanks for your comments guys. It's not noisy at the moment so will try a new gasket and check out the tax forum.

That's the company who does reçonditioning.
A friend had one rebuiltb for his vitesse (same pump but different pulley offset) and is very pleased with it and the service.
