As an aside, anybody got any information on the use of Mimosa yellow, not Inca, after about July-August 1973?

The 16v Slant 4 engine is more fun than the 3.5 V8, because you mostly drive it on the upslope of the torque curve.

Factory 1977 TR7 Sprint FHC VVC 697S (Now all of, but still needs putting together)
B&Y 73 Dolomite Sprint UVB 274M (kids!)

Page 04-5 of the 1977 Sprint workshop manual list 59 shades. Yes Fifty Nine ! I never realised there were so many.
Some I've never heard of actually being used in Dolomite production like ...
Matador Red 12
Cherry red 22 ( I had a 1960 Mini in this )
New Tan 33
Saddle Tan 43
Jonquil 14
Wimpey 24
Olive 35
Lichfield 45
Renoir blue 46
Print blue 76

The 1980 Parts book lists 27 shades which are probably Dolomite specific.
The only yellow shades are Inca and Beige. No mimosa.

Something else they list is that if the paint code is followed by an "A" it has been sprayed in Acrylic which must have been around in 1977.

Inca Yellow was only available from 1976 on-wards before that it would have been Mimosa Yellow.

Unfortunately no data on this sort of detail! We only just about have annual production numbers for Sprints (not other models)

There was a guy going round a few years back claiming there were only 4 Sprint autos built in Magenta. This is rubbish as I know of at least 4 (one since converted to manual) and 2 other "possibles" In any case no data of this sort was ever released by the factory, you'd have to spend a week or two at Gaydon, going through the records of all 20odd thousand Sprints individually to get the numbers you want, don't bother asking me to do it, i'm not that anally retentive!

Matador red, new tan, saddle tan and beige are all trim colours. Along with shadow blue (27) chestnut (63) black (11) and grey (78)

Jonquil, Olive, Lichfield and Renoir are all Triumph factory colours, but from the early 60s and had been deleted from the pallette by around 1964. I've never heard of Print blue and have heard of, but never seen Wimpey yellow! May have been a special colour for Wimpey's fleet vehicles!

My Sprint parts list for sept 75 gives 21 shades, which includes 5 trim colours, the 4 i've numbered above and beige (74)
Black (11) was also unique as being a paint choice too (cost option, except 1500SE)

Colours for early Sprints are

Pimento, Carmine and Magenta in reds

Sienna and Maple in browns

Mimosa in yellow

Emerald and BRG (75) in greens

Sapphire, Mallard, Ice, French and Delft in blues

White (19) and Honeysuckle in whites.

I've seen all but Emerald green, in the tin on Sprints at one time or another.

Post 75 Sprint colours include Vermillion, Flamenco, Russet, Inca, Sandglow, Brooklands, Pageant and Tahiti blues. As well as Carmine and White which continued throughout production.

I also have a 73 Toledo parts list which adds

Signal red (32)

Saffron(64)

Laurel Green (55)

Wedgewood (26) Royal (56) Valencia (66) and Imperial Blue (96, this may be a trim colour too)

Damson (17)

Slate (68)

Most of these colours are from the 60s Triumph palette and had been deleted by 74. The only one i've not seen in life on a Toledo is Signal red and i've no knowledge of Imperial blue at all.

Similar question would be does anyone know of originally yellow Sprints between chassis numbers from 2000 to 13268?
Presumably any such cars would all be Mimosa.

I know of two mimosa cars between 2000 and about 2200, so the other question would be what about ones that weren't yellow between 2000 and 2200?

Effectively only one, code 19 and called only "White"

Triumph only listed 3 white shades in total, 19 White, 29 Sebring white, which was popular on early 2 tone Heralds and discontinued in the mid 60s and 39 Honeysuckle, which is more a pale yellow and was discontinued at the 76 palette change. This 76 change point also introduced a different 3 letter code for paint colours, but, AFAIK, the only 2 colours that survived the change, Carmine Red (82) and White (19) kept their original numerical designations.........Unless you know otherwise! What's the paint code on your very late white car?

So, every day a school day!

It's likely that this colour, with the 3 letter code, was also introduced at the 76 pallette change. Whether it is, in fact, 19 white with a new name and code, would have to be determined by a paint supplier by comparing the recipes! It's certainly a VERY similar shade to 19! I have a very good eye for discerning small differences in shade and tone, but it's very hard to make a positive determination from photos, the camera, unfortunately, DOES lie!

But to answer your original question, this will be the ONLY white shade available after 75. At least until the introduction of the Acclaim in 82 which drew it's colours from Honda. By then, all "proper" Triumphs were extinct.

The same reason that Magenta (really VERY purple) was called red, Mallard (pretty much green) was called blue and Damson (more or less Burgundy red) was listed as a purple shade!

I rather suspect that the guy who categorised the colours at the factory was somewhat colour blind!

There's an old, old story, about the chief engineer of the London and South Western railway in the 19th century, a rather formidable guy called Stroudley, who was colour blind, but was tasked with picking a new green livery for the company's locos. He settled on a rather revolting baby poo yellow/brown colour, but nobody had the guts to tell him, so the livery was adopted by the LSWR and was known ever after (and to this day) as "Stroudley's engine green"!

Wow did not know that !
Murdo As yours is the latest white sprint to survive as far as we know it would be interesting to see if any other later white cars have this code and indeed if it just another name for Code 19 white.
