Rear springs and cap fitting issues
Rear springs and cap fitting issues
My new -1in 175lb springs don't fit in the cap. They are 60 thou bigger than the cap internal size. Waiting on a response from Rimmers but can someone measure a spring please ? Mine are 3.690 and the cap is 3.630 inside.
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Rear springs and cap fitting issues
The ones I got from Rimmers didn't fit either. (mine were supposed to be HD standard, the rears didn't fit and the fronts were too low)

Re: Rear springs and cap fitting issues
I don't have a clean rear spring to hand, but I do have a NOS rear spring cap, for which the largest internal diameter measures 3.637"

Re: Rear springs and cap fitting issues
The Rimmers ones don't fit irrespective of whether they are STD, uprated, lowered etc. For the sake of 5 mins with a Dremel i'd just grind a bit off the top coil. It's such a tiny amount it's unlikely to cause a problem.

Re: Rear springs and cap fitting issues
Have Rimmers been told?
If so, why are they still sending them out to customers without advising them of the problem?

Re: Rear springs and cap fitting issues
Send them back to Rimmers and tell them it's not good enough !!, also I would not modify them as then they can then say they have been tampered with and if you have any further problems will not be able to return them

Re: Rear springs and cap fitting issues
Email I sent to Rimmers:
They were also told that their standard HD front springs produce a ride height that is approx. 1" lower than standard.
They said they'd speak to their supplier and then did nothing.
Sadly I've never found an alternative supplier.
Cheers, Sam

Just to let you know, the rear springs you supplied (218324HD) don't fit. The outer diameter of the spring coils is too large to fit within the top spring plates (part number 154118)
I've had to fettle the plates/springs to get them to fit as I need the car back on the road urgently.
If it wasn't for my urgent need to get the car on the road I would have returned the springs as unfit for purpose.
Regards,
Sam

Re: Rear springs and cap fitting issues
Many moons ago when I replaced the rear springs on my 1850, I bought them from T.D. Fitchett and they've been fine ever since. Don't forget that the spring tops are angled so they'll only fit one way.

Re: Rear springs and cap fitting issues
They made out they did not know but I mentioned it has been highlighted to them before. I rang three times last week with details for them to check and had to chase them every time as they never called back when they said they would. Friday they said they would speak to their supplier ( a theme going here ) and would definitely call back Monday AM. They didn't, so i chased again and asked for a manger as I had been dealing with so called "customer services " and they were not helping. Funnily enough a manager was not available and they transferred me to customer services !
Their response was the supplier had not contacted them and there is nothing they could do. What do you suggest i do with useless springs then ? All we can suggest is you send them back.
Tommorow they will be collected and now i need to find some 175lb -1in springs. I have adjustable seat Gaz ready to fit so i am wondering if standard springs will be ok with 250lb ones up front ? I usually run it quite low and don't want to run out of adjustment. Failing that if nobody sells them i will have to have some made up.
I used to support Rimmers from all the flack but they have gone right down in my estimations.

The last email I got from them on the subject of springs that aren't as described:
Sadly I needed the car urgently on the road for events.

Dear Sam,
I have forwarded this extra information onto the purchasing department for review. I’ll be in touch once I have any further information.
Thank you for your continued patience.
I just gave up after that.Sam Clayton <sam@the-claytons.me>

Did you ever manage to make any progress on this issue?

Re: Rear springs and cap fitting issues
You won't run out of adjustment with Gaz, Mike!
I've got stock Sprint front springs and stock Toledo rears on Gaz ASP and it's as low as it can get without ripping out the sump plug, but still some adjustment left!

Steve
Looking closer at that pic, which is a few years old, it's lower than that now, the springs (which were NOS) have settled further with time!

Re: Rear springs and cap fitting issues
As an aside, I personally don't reckon you need stiffer than stock (140lb?) rear springs, but I do like a soft tail!
Too hard on the rear is actually counter productive unless you have an LSD, the inside rear wheel will lift and lose traction on hard cornering if it can't roll a bit!

Re: Rear springs and cap fitting issues
Thanks Steve.
I think standard may be ok on the rears as it is supposed to be soft with harder fronts. As you know I use it on the road and track.. Not sure how hard it is going to be to get 250 fronts however so I am thinking I may have to try and get a refund on the shocks as well and go the AVO route as it seems you can get numerous springs for those ..

Re: Rear springs and cap fitting issues
These lower themselves and soften too. That was the case already 15 years ago. Also their 2500 springs and all their springs. People want cheap and get cheap. The few that want to spend have to find an alternative themselves.
