This is the first time I've posted on this Forum so hope it goes well ! I've gained much valuable info and tips by dipping in now and then, thanks. I simply want to know is the Starter Motor the same on an Auto Gearbox as a Manual? Can anyone help please. I've emailed Powerlite but they are not certain if an RAC 406 will fit.
Thanks any replies.
One thing to be aware of is that the powerlite units do not have a ballast bypass connection. This is used to short out the ignition ballast resistor whilst cranking to increase the strength of the spark.
This gave me problems with starting particularly with a hot engine.
It is possible to solve this by wiring in a relay to provide the ballast bypass. I didn't want to do this and eventually replaced the original starter.
Thanks for the prompt reply Paul B.
So a Powerlite RAC 406 as someone on this Great Forum fitted to a Dolomite Sprint should fit. In which case I will reply to last email from Powerlite and place my order (if price reasonable !)
As to the Ballast Resistor issue,
The resistor is situated near the fuse box and is in the Ignition On circuit. Being rated at 6volts. So that when the Starter is operated it gets (reduced) full battery voltage on the Start circuit. I'm a Maintenance Electrician by trade so have some Electrical Knowledge. I hope I've understood this right ?
And before fitting, take out the solenoid and put some grease on it and on the cover. That will save you some starting trouble in the near future.
The next thing is find an old Toyota in the scrapyard, 400.000mls no problem. Take the original used Denso contacts from it's starter and put these in your new High torque upgrade starter and bin the Chinese crap what was fitted.
Thanks for the replies, much appreciated,
Ps, just been out for 30mile run A roads and Motorway. I enjoy "p155 on" Moderns at (just a little over the limit) . She's going very well.
