Rear roof pillar vinyl covers!!

Hi,

I’m at a point now where I need to fit my vinyl covers to the rear pillars on the Dolomite.
I have my original ones which I carefully removed - bit distorted though. I also have a couple of old new stock ones, but again they’re all wrinkled up.

So....has anyone tackled these themselves, or is it a job for a trimmer?

Anyone know of any articles on these?

I have an aerosol of impact adhesive ( evo stick ) and another non branded one from eBay.
Maybe there’s better adhesives out there?

Has anyone maybe found sheets of self adhesive vinyl thick enough and with the right texture that’s a good alternative?

I was wondering if putting the originals or even the new ones in very hot but not boiling water may make them go very floppy, quickly dry off and apply?!

Really not sure on this one.

Can anyone advise?

Be careful with glues, some can melt the plastic.

Thanks for that, very handy to know.

The vinyls a good price, I’ll order some up and see how we go. I see it’s resistant to 75 degrees, maybe a dunk in 75 degrees water so nice and malleable, then warm up the cars paint, dry the vinyl peel and go!

would love to do mine as since restoration they are body coloured, i just dont have the balls.

Hi Chris.
Some years ago now I tried to remove the vinyl to deal with some localised grot underneath. As you say the originals are prone to cracking an mine never went back as well as I wanted - so I pulled it off.

I purchased some vinyl from one of the shows - plenty of it to have a go at. If you cut it oversize and stick it with contact adhesive (from memory the supplier threw in a aerosol of Dunlop trim adhesive) on the main panel first, I then used a heat gun to gently mould it round the edges. Clothes pegs are good to keep it tightly clipped around the door aperture.

I think I left mine overnight before then trimming round the edges with a sharp knife and sealing it at the top near the gutter with some black sealant.

I have a project on the go at the moment - again some rust behind, so I will either do the same or I too did think about some of the self adhesive vinyl that they use in 'wrapping'. Or paint it black!

Worth a go and if you have plenty of material you can have a few goes - but if I can manage it anyone can!

This my plan as well, when I get round to replacing them. I ripped the old one off because they were holding damp mud against the metal, thankfully no rot.

One thing I would say is check the material is OK to use for external use. The last thing you want is material that absorbs waters and holds it next to the bodywork.

I have the same job at hand. I can feel rusty bumps underneath the passenger side and really need to remove the vinyl and explore... I’m not afraid of rust as I’ll merely cut it out, filler and treat etc, however my concern is how to take to ‘D’ badge off without breaking it? Anyone know how best to do this?
Also I guess replacing the vinyl will be a job but your convo has given me inspiration to crack on... thanks guys.

Replaced one of the rear pillar vinyl covers with David Parnell on one of his cars with the help of his cleaning lady who used to be a trimmer. To be honest we stood back while she showed us how to do it!!. Been meaning to do a write up for Dollymixture.

A bit tricky but not hard, David sourced some BMW spec vinyl which was a very good match and had a good stretch to aid getting round the shape. The replaced side hard to tell from the original side. Details on a thread on here somewhere - 'vinyl roof material' from November 2018.

The originals were moulded off the car and fitted on the line with a slap of glue. The cracking / bubbling where glue missed.
