Universal Joint

As part of the dodgem mower project, I need to change the angle of the steering column (a rod with an OD of 16mm) of the mower, so that this can be realigned to the position the steering wheel would have had on the dodgem. I want, if possible, to leave alone the pinion, and wedge-shaped 'rack' with which this engages, at the bottom end of the rod.

Does that sound like a sensible day forward?

If so, I have it in mind to use a pair of universal joints, with the steering rod suitably held in place. However, these seem awfully expensive. (I know they are wonderful pieces of complex engineering, and probably warrant their prices; but I'm trying to undertake this project on a shoestring.)

Thus, I've been wondering whether I could instead use a pair of universal joint 16mm sockets, as these are much cheaper. The socket ends could be welded to the rod, top and bottom, with a square-form rod between the sockets, welded into the drive end of the sockets.

I've got several assorted steering shafts here with UJs attached in a variety of diameters and lengths, mostly left over from my aborted PAS project. Some are even telescopic.
