Rebuild but no spark !!!
Rebuild but no spark !!!
Hi,
If anyone can help please do, My mothers had an 1850 for a while now, been sat at my dads for 8 or so years for him to repair unfortunately he hadn't touched much of it, Finally got the engine rebuilt blah blah and most of it back togethor now but i have no spark at the plug or points so it seems, tried 2 old different coils on it but still no joy, any suggestions from anyone on what it could be, its had new plugs, new points, new condensor, dizzy cap and rotor arm is in good condition. We have power in on the coil positive and power coming out of the coil pack, What should the ohms be measuring, i don't think they are as high as they should be, even still i cant see a spark between the points, i'm going to retro test the coil to see if they're working as they should. Other than that does anyone else have any ideas ?
Regards

Re: Rebuild but no spark !!!
If you still have the old condenser refit that one and give it a try. One of my 1500 dolomites was misfiring so I fitted a new condenser only to find that I still had the same problem. Two days later when I went back to square one and fitted another condenser which I had purchase a long time ago did the engine run correctly. I was not happy.
Re: Rebuild but no spark !!!
Ok will check that, i do have the old one yes, always keep old parts just in case !!
Re: Rebuild but no spark !!!
Also i have 2 wires coming up to the coil pack, one is a constant live with the ignition the other is nothing so i'm guessing this goes to the negative on the coil pack, they are both in the same part of the loom.

The second wire (white/slate) is a rev counter feed and should be connected to coil -ve, along with the lead out to the distributor points. You don't say what year the car is, but early 1850s won't run if the rev counter is not in the circuit. Or indeed, if there is an internal fault in the rev counter.

Re: Rebuild but no spark !!!
Thanks Steve, Unplugged the secondary wire today or i don't know what it was but it all started sparking and arcing as it should !! i'll try plug the other wire back in if its for the rev counter as you say and see if it stops it again.
Re: Rebuild but no spark !!!
Behold she runs !!!! After getting it to spark i stuck some fuel in, took a while to pull it up from the tank but started back firing out the left hand carb, Had a little think, checked all the timing for the bottom end and cam was right which it was, Turns out i had put the dizzy in 180 degrees out, spun it round and bang she started !! Now to put the interior back together and all the other little bits and pieces, i'll post some pics up when its light outside tomorrow.

Everytime I have had the spark fail it is either been this or a loose lead.Jummyboy123 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 31, 2019 8:45 pm Behold she runs !!!! At the moment I am playing guess the correct timing with my Sprint engine, it has leccy ignition, so can't be statically timed. It doesn't have to be out by much to prevent the engine firing.
Re: Rebuild but no spark !!!
It should always spark just won't be at the right time, if it's not sparking all the time you must have a bad earth somewhere other than that just yeah bad timing. Buy a timing gun off eBay and check it out.
