Hello All,
There are a lot of people on here with experience of all makes of car.
So how about a Renault Megane that seems to have lost its gear linkage. That is the gear lever can be stirred around with no connection to the gears.
A local " Tyre and Exhaust fitting place " has taken the engine assy; out already and now says a new gearbox will be needed at £1000 Plus fitting. Really ?
It sounds like a linkage problem to me.
Any ideas please ?
Thanks ,
Tony.

What year, engine size...
Generally they have a cable change. If the 2 cables are intact it can only be an internal gearbox problem.

Hi Tony, Check if the linkage is operating at the gearbox end when moving the gear lever? If it is then it's internal
Highly unusual to have no gears at all. Renault box's tend to make one hell of a racket before they let go.
I have seen gear levers break at the bottom though, try pulling the gearlever straight up to see if that has happened.

Hello Both, Thanks very much for your contributions on this. It was most informative. Things moved on a lot today and the owner has decided to sell it on as it is .
I was surprised as this is an unusual low mileage car !
Oh dear. My reaction was " Don't Panic " and get some quotes first as always.
Oh well..........,
Never mind.
Cheers All,
Tony.
