Steering Rack

Does any one know if you can fit a steering rack from a Stag in a Dolomite ? reson for asking is, it may be an easier way to fit power steering in the Dolomite

Don’t think the Stag rack will fit.

My old Stag powered Sprint didn’t have power steering
New suspension joints etc felt reasonable light.
(Be much lighter with the 13B Rotary and Escort Quick Rack)

Didn’t someone mention the old Montego Maestro was a option.

Easier option may be the Corsa Electric column mounted motor

The pinion angle in a dolomite is the issue.

Personally I've never found the need for a power steering rack in a dolly, and that's with arthritic thumbs and bad wrists.

My MG midget however!

I was half wondering if the rack off an MGF might fit but I haven't measured it.

Eh? I have owned three Midgets and they are the lightest car to steer I have driven in over 50 years of motoring, so light you can get away with tiny steering wheels. With the standard steering wheel I don't find the Dolly a problem at all - OK it's a bit heavy at parking speed. The problem is that people now expect to be able to spin the wheel with the car stationary, something we never did back in the sixties. My dad would have told you it wears out the ball joints and scuffs the tyres.

My BGT V8 is a different kettle of fish and I have an expensive EZ electric PAS kit on it, and wouldn't be without it. The Easysteer option wasn't on the market when I fitted my car otherwise I would have saved a lot of money and used that.

It's a Frontline Midget, 14 inch rims, modified geometry, sticky rubber and a very quick early rack. Even with the lighter K Series it is very heavy when stationary.

When moving it's fine, in fact with 180bhp at the flywheel you steer it on the throttle.

Gone down the rear wheel steering route then James?? I used to be able to park up using the handbrake on my mk1 escort.......
