Headlamps - Euro Car parts £20.78 - Sadly did not fit

With Rimmers using DHL who impossible to deal with, I am picking these up from Euro car parts tomorrow, £20 a pair with the Winter35 code.

Hopefully they work, I will post if not on Friday, but they are on my way home from work so no hassle if the don’t!

I put the part code into google, they are 7" units and I believe the Dolly ones are 5 3/4", so they won't fit.

Sadly your right, no dice!

Euro car parts were very good, Bought them, check in car park, Saw they would not fit, and get a refund.

Looks like I am stuck trying to get a reasonable priced replacements for my 1975 1500TC, Lucky I dont use my full beam much!

The search continues!

If you have a look at this web site https://www.europaspares.com/auto-elect ... units.html and scroll down you will find several 5.75 inch light units. The best (and most expensive) are the Cibie units. As always, you get what you are prepared to pay for. I bought 7 inch Cibie units from these people for my MGB and they are superb.

My Dolomite wears four of the ones from Rimmers - Indian manufacture I think. They aren't too bad, but not as good as the Cibies on the MGB.

If you want quality then you have to pay for it as Bumpa says. However on good old Fleabay you can get a set of 4 (2 outer dip/main H4 and 2 inner mains H1) for less then £40 delivered. Here is one example:

I fitted a set of these "cheapies" to my Stag about 8 years ago. They have been OK except after about 5 years they clouded over inside. Not sure what it was but it just wiped off with a clean rag, bit of a faff feeding it through the bulb hole but they still look OK 3 years further on. I recently bought another set for my Sprint. Again they work perfectly well but don't expect A1 quality at this price. The locating lugs (actually bit of bent metal on the rim of the reflector) on one of the outer units would not locate correctly in the original headlamp bowl. Easily fixed by bending with some pliers and nibbling a little bit out of the headlamp bowl. The other thing to note if changing all four (dip.main outer and main inner) is that the new inner lamp is a H1 and the original connector will not fit. New connectors are available on Fleabay for a few ££, I got these, simple snip off the old connector and join the wires, I soldered them and the used heatshrink sleeving.

If you car still has the original headlamps and wiring I would strongly recommend fitting an new feed and earth cables and switching the headlamps via relays. The new halogen bulbs will try to pull a bit more current than the originals putting even more stress on the wiring and more importantly the original light switch and dip switch, chances are they won't last long before failing if you use them for anything other than the annual MoT! Rewiring and fitting relays will also get maximum potential out the bulbs, they will be brighter so worth doing for that reason alone.

Call me a pleb if you wish, but I have had excellent service from a pair of cheapish "crystal" headlights on my spitfire, fitted with Osram Nightbreaker halogens. (bulbs notcheap, but very good) Also on relays.
This is on my spitfire, fitted 10 years ago, used on night rallies and plenty of night driving. They are excellent. Good as a modern car...

A set of 4 crystal headlights can be had for under £50, or just buy the H4 type for the outers if funds are tight. Pair of quality H4 bulbs and a couple of relays, bobs your uncle.

I've got 4 Lucas outer bulb type headlights, think they came from Alun's sale of Teds stuff. They look original and fit perfectly. And even ancient as they are, the reflectors are perfect.

These will connect as normal to the H4 outers and the original inner connectors will connect to the 2 correct pins of the H4 inners to give main beam only when selected. Bonus is there are 2 spare outer bulbs in the car if a dip bulb ever fails!

Last year I broke a 1500 that had been recently fitted with a set of the "Autopal" lights as sold by Rimmers etc. I doubt they had been in the car as much as 1 year. Yet 3 of the 4 reflectors were partly corroded and the bowls and adjusters (these seem to have been part of the kit, they certainly weren't Triumph originals) were all defective in one way or another. The adjusters that weren't broken or seized were also incredibly flimsy.

I wasn't impressed, to say the least and binned the lot!

Made some very interesting reading, I did buy the cheap eBay items 6 months ago but the were a bit small, can I get adaptor ring to make these fit? Looks like I have original style items fitted!
