Single-line brake fluid reservoir

#1 Post by TFN »

Good evening, I am refurbishing the single-line brake system on my Dolomite Sprint but can not find a replacement brake fluid reservoir. I have found a reservoir with similar dimensions at Merlin Motor Sport but the tread is too long (not a major issue as I could cut the tread down) but it also doesn't have the grove in the side that seats against the 'fin' on the brake master cylinder.

Has anyone fitted this reservoir or know where I can find a simple replacement for my original one?

https://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p/gi ... r-s?pn=517

Thank you.

Your Sprint has a single line BRAKE master cylinder with a plastic reservoir?

Whilst I am aware of the existence of such a cylinder, it's not an original part for a Triumph (possibly Sherpa/Jag/LR?)

The correct cylinder for your car would have a solid alloy body with the reservoir incorporated.

The club can supply recon cylinders of the correct type, stainless steel lined for longer life. IMO this would be the best way to go!

Thank you for the replies but there is some confusion. It is a single-line brake master cylinder with a plastic brake fluid reservoir. I have seen many Sprints with this set up (picture attached) and had assumed it was orginal. I have ordered a re-sleeved brake master cylinder from the club and wanted to put a new reservoir on it as mine is cracked but not leaking. Rimmers sell a refurbished single-line brake master cylinder with a new reservoir but won't sell just the reservoir or provide me with the name of a supplier.

I'll keep looking.

If you have ordered a cylinder from the club, it will come complete with reservoir already fitted.

Currently out of stock, we hope to be picking up a fresh supply next week.

Thanks, that's perfect. Nigel is going to email me when they are available. On another note the servo looks great, thank you for getting it to the spares day.

I realise you are sorted, but i'd just like to add to this business of the plastic reservoir.

I'm still sure it was never fitted from new, the French blue car in your illustration is a series 1 car, ie Sub VA 15000, as that colour was only available till then. Series 1 cars ALL had the solid master from new. I myself own VA26140, one of the last few hundred pre dual circuit series 3 cars and that also had a solid master from new (and still did when I bought it in 2012) So there's really no room for this cylinder to be a factory install.

The only reason I can think of to explain the sizeable scattering of plastic reservoir cylinders throughout the series range/timespan is that the plastic reservoir cylinder must have been an update/supercession for spare parts supplied aftermarket. Either though Leyland/Unipart or by Girling. So if an original failed, this one would have been issued instead. Which at least gives it a kind of legitimacy!

Are you sure about that Steve?

All the Dolomites I've owned have had plastic brake reservoirs, never seen one with an alloy one?

Looking in the September 1975 parts book, RTC9006B, the illustration of the single line master cylinder is identical to that fitted to my '75 car, which has a plastic reservoir. More interesting are the illustrations in the R.O.M. (AKM 3629 2nd edition). Page 70-5 has a drawing appearing to show the plastic one (70.30.01), whilst on the next page it shows the alloy one (70.30.02). The handbook illustration on page 48 also appears to show the plastic one. Searching on GMC216 always seems to pull up one with a plastic reservoir. I think it did actually change in production, and good old B.L. just fitted what ever came up from the parts bins on the production line, hence Steve's later one having a alloy one from new.

Maybe i've got it wrong and the solid one is the Girling replacement. I also have the 75 Sprint parts list which shows unmistakably the plastic reservoir. I've just checked my 73 Toledo parts list and that too shows a plastic reservoir though i'm absolutely CERTAIN the low mileage 2 owner Carledo came to me with a solid master.

Alun's 73/4 Magenta car which has been in my yard has a solid one (around VA 6xxx), VA261xx which I own had a solid one although long since sent to Alun for core in favour of a tandem one. But VA 101xx shown below has plastic when I could have sworn that was a solid one too.

It would appear that I have opened my mouth and firmly placed my foot in it! Ignore me i'm obviously becoming senile!

My magenta car has a plastic reservoir.

All Sprints have plastic brake reservoirs, whether single or tandem.

Plastic reservoir as pictured on my 72 1850, also on my old 75 1500 TC, 72 1500 fwd and 73 1500 fwd... never seen anything different on a single circuit car.
