Worktops for garage

#1 Post by Mad Mart »

My garage is near-as-damn-it finished so I want to get some kitchen worktops ordered. I've found some in Homebase for £79 per 3 metre length (I need 9 metres altogether) plus delivery. Not many of the DIY places will deliver.

Before I go ahead, does anyone have any suggestions for a better, cheaper solution for a worktop?

Depends on what you are going to do on it the Mart? I had kitchen worktop on my bench but they "bounce" if you are hitting anything with a hammer, more so if if you have a vice mounted on it?
I ended up buying 6inch x 3 inch timber to put underneath to get it solid. I got all my stuff second hand and the whole lot was under £100 and the bench itself was made of dexion heavy duty shelving again second hand and bolted it all together :D there are plenty of second hand worktops about, you will also find it chips very easy as well.

Anything kicking around on Gumtree or ebay Mart? I appreciate you won't want any old offcuts in your new garage but you may find some good sections. What's the worktop like in the house?!

I don't mind off cuts as long as they match. We have a place near me that sells off cuts etc. but he only has five 3m. lengths in stock which are seconds but all different. £25 each plus delivery. I suppose I could by some planks & glue/screw them together.

What length are you looking for Mart? I found my problems were when Knocking bearings or ball joints out, hense i was loosing something solid to hit against.

I used scaffold planks then screwed a sheet of steel to the top, but my bench is only about 2m long.

Hello Mart. B&Q sell solid beech worktops. I think they are 20mm high rather than the laminate 25mm..quite a bit cheaper too!

Once oiled, they have a lovely natural look and feel to them. 8)
