When I took the front panel of my car off to replace I noticed the engine was not sitting level, the engine mount on the intake side is sagging quite a lot. The oil pump is almost touching the steering rack, I know its always close but not that close. I intend to make a replacement engine mount but before I do i'd like to know where the engine should sit in relation to the the oil pump to steering rack distance and/or the distance from the sump/engine flange to the top of the crossmember.
let me know if you are able to provide these measurements before I start hacking and slashing.
Measurements as requested. Bottom of sump outer edge to top of subframe and smallest clearance between oil pump and steering rack mount. Two Sprints, one auto, other manual overdrive.
Manual, sump to subframe, offside 58mm, nearside 79mm, oil pump 10-12mm. Can't recall changing engine mounts but if I did would have been circa 2000.
Auto, sump to subframe, offside 55mm, nearside 78mm, oil pump 7-8mm. New engine mounts when I built this one up in 2011/2. Both sets would have come from Rimmers.
Never any sign of engine touching rack, nor excess vibration with engine steady bar correctly adjusted.
I am not a sprint owner but I am aware that the sprint engine mounts like the OHV mounts do have an offset built into them so looking at your photographs I do wonder if the off side mount has been put in upside down. I have not see any reference in any of the workshop manuals that points out that the mounts have an offset and hence there is a right and wrong way up to fit them. I have recently been investigating what amount of offset is required for OHV mounts for Chris Witor who may produce poly mounts. May I suggest that you turn the off side mount around as this would raise the engine if the mount has not just sagged. I will attach a photo of an OHV mount that clearly shows what I mean be an offset.
Richard, the offside mount in there now is actually from an MGB I think. I put it in there 5 or 6 years ago when I found a broken mount (Dolly stuff is not easy to come by over here quickly) and forgot about it until recently.
