Coachline removal

#1 Post by Carledo »

As many of us are turning our attention to paintwork repairs i thought I'd drop this tip.

In common with many, i've been trying to remove several different colours and widths of coachline from different panels to prepare them for paint and spending lots of time and broken nails/burnt fingers trying to get the blankety blank things off with the help of a heat gun and getting varying levels of success between slow and painful removal (leaving glue behind) and obstinate refusal to budge.

Then a painter mate said "you need a Caramel wheel", "a what?" says I, suspecting a wind up, "look on ebay" he says, so I did!

I bought one, there are hundreds to choose from, most less than a tenner, I picked the one recommended by Wheeler Dealers, if it's good enough for Edd, it'll do me!

It arrived this morning and after a couple of minutes familiarising myself with how to use it, I proceeded to rip the remaining 80% of coachlines off the Dolomega in around 15 minutes where i'd probably spent most of a day on the first 20% No paint damage at all, glue and everything came off quickly and easily.

Even if I never use it again (and there is plenty left of it) I'll count it as one of the best £8 odd i've ever spent!

I used one for removing the glue left over from removing the vinyl roof prior to paint.
The one wheel did the whole roof effortless and left me looking like I’d been in a saw mill.
Was recommended by one of the paint stalls in an auto jumble. After trying unsuccessfully with numerous paint thinners and washing up liquid and whatever else was under the kitchen sink.

We live and learn.

What Tony Said ^^^^

Never seen or heard of them before. Watched a couple of Youtube videos and found some other names, "Toffee" being one of them. Good bit of info, thanks Steve!

Hadn't thought of that, i've a lot of leftover glue on the D posts I can also treat with it! Back to the sawmill!

Probably also good to do things like the area where the boot seal fits to the lid, the last time I did this on the Carledo it took me a while to get it all off with dedicated Evo-Stick solvent and lots of elbow grease.
