Wiring harness battery cable takeoff

#1 Post by James467 »

So, who knows the proper name for these and where I can get one? I have searched everywhere, spoken to Autosparks, automotive electrical spares etc... but nothing!!

You must be able to get them new as I have brand new (not NOS) Stag and TR6 battery cables with them on, problem is that they are in the wrong place for a dolomite!!

I don't know what it's properly called, but it's function is that of an inline bus-bar.

I think the Dolomite one or more particularly the slant one (OHV models have a different remote fitting) has been NLA for a good while.

My inclination would be to re engineer it with a plain cable that any factors will make for you from battery to starter and a second slightly smaller cable to a single bolt remote fitting which you can get from Car Builder Solutions amongst others. I've used one on the Dolomega as a sort of distribution point on the N/S flitch, the lead from the boot mounted battery goes to it and all the power leads out to various points in the car, including the starter/alternator, relay boards and the 4 original brown permanent leads radiate from here.

I could take a photo, but you wouldn't see much, it's buried in wire and half under the relay box!

But to me, it's a much more elegant solution, especially if you are upgrading the car with more relays and stuff, I've always disliked drawing permanent live accesory power straight from the battery, its seems, well, amateurish!

This, of course, will only work for NON concours cars, to those who regard originality as paramount, I can only recommend sourcing a good used one!

I know what it does and where it sits Steve, I have re-engineered one before on RUK. I want to buy a new one for NWL.

They must be avaliable as I said I have a new battery cable for the TR6 and Johns old Stag and they both have new ones on them.

The alternative is for me to modify another TR6 cable but I dont want to do that.

Interesting question, a part I've tried and failed to find in the past. Instead I used a shortened sprint item to give me additional takeoffs on my 1500HL and I have another to do same on the TC when I get around to it. New would be nicer than diminishing the limited pool though.
It's bound to be a Lucas part, have you tried them? There's two proper old school Lucas outlets in the forest I could try for you when things open up again.

I really don't think you can purchase them. If you could track down who makes the TR6 cable, you might be able to get one, but I have my doubts the manufacturer would co-operate.
Could you not remove it from the TR6 cable ?

You read my mind Paul, I'll try and find out who makes the stag and tr6 cables and if they won't sell the part I will at least try and comission a batch for Dolomites.

Thanks Julian, yes it's definitely a Lucas part. It has Lucas stamped on it. Can't find it in the triumph specific Lucas catalogue though.

I think you need a later book. Only Stag Mk II (1973) and later TR6 had that type of battery lead. Not sure how early they were used on Dolomites, my 1976 book doesn't show it but I don't believe it was that late.

The one in the photo looks like a replica part?
Original ones have raised (rather than stamped) lettering saying
"Lucas England
Patented"
with said lettering being an integral part of both halves of the body mouldings.

It is a replica part Ian, yes. I know what the originals look like I have a number here, like I said not NOS. But the leads are available new for Stags, TR6's and Spitfires. I want new ones so that I can have a batch of new battery cables made for Dolomites. ](*,)

Thanks Julian, I'll try and find a later book, they were certainly used up until the end of production as NWL has one fitted and it was in DTR which was an early 1850. I think by best best is Pauls suggestion which was to track down who makes them. Will phone Moss on Tuesday.

Just trying to be helpful James,
to be fair you did in fact state it is the Stag and TR6 cables that are new.

James, its definitely an Autospark's part or at least, Autosparks have them made (most likely in China): I ordered a new full harness for my Sprint and that standard part came with it as a faithful representation.

I'll be ordering another for VA138.
Come and see some pretty shoddy, slow driving of a really well prepared competition Sprint here!

I agree; there does not seem to be any reference to this in the 1976 parts book.
But in the 1973 Dolomite parts book page 21-28 under "Police car equipment -Battery " there is a part that looks very much like this.
159459.
And Mr Rimmer seems to have these in stock.
https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-159459

About £6 a cable. If this can be removed easily from the 1850 cable it might be possible to re-use it.

My Sprint parts list for Sept 75 (covers series 1 and and refers to series 2 cars in places) says the correct battery cable is 518933 but the picture is ambiguous, it doesn't show the entire thing OR the bit you want, but i'm sure it would contain it. A couple of pages later, the picture of the underbonnet loom is clear enough that you can SEE the 4 terminals that fit to it!

The Sprint list also lists the 159459 for police use along with what looks like a battery fitted isolator.

As far as I can tell the only difference betwen the two is that the stock one has that useless lead terminal that completely encompasses the +ve terminal of the battery and is secured with a tapping screw and the police version just has a ring terminal at the battery end.

So for complete authenticity for concours you'd need the 518933 which Rimmers, unhelpfully, don't list! I rather suspect that the aftermarket one from Autosparks or whoever will also feature a more modern bolted clamp.
