Getting at the hazard flasher relay and other problems.

#1 Post by alvera »

I am about to fit a tow bar and electrics to my 1972 1850 dolomite. It occurred to me that the standard flasher unit wouldn't be up to flashing three 21w bulbs when the trailer is connected.
Today I took a look at the flasher unit which has been replaced in the past, being a round two pin one, instead of the spare two pin one that is illustrated in the workshop manual. So I need an uprated one to facilitate the tow bar electrics.Any suggestions please.
At the same time I was inspecting the flasher unit I switched on the hazard lights which worked but flashed quite fast. After a few minutes they stopped working altogether.
Looking at the wiring diagram there is a second flasher relay for the hazards located I think behind the dashboard. Taking the four screws out and looking behind the dash I can see a square flasher unit there presumably for the hazards and presumably operates the hazards so rightly or wrongly I think it needs replacing but it is very awkward to get at as the dash doesn't seem to come away much.
Any help from anybody on here that knows what they are doing would be very helpful. And any suppliers would be helpful.

I use this type on my classic cars, I got sick of the random/lame flash speeds of the current replacements for the metal can type:

Not cheap, but you just plug it in and it works.

There are two flasher units, one next to the hazard light switch and the other below the tachometer.

On my 1850, given that the indicators worked even when the engine wasn't running,
I left the flasher units alone and
instead added relays for the back indicators and trailer board.
(I also added a relay for the brake lights.)

I use a generic 3-pin electronic flasher of ebay, which flashes the same rate with or without the trailer board; unless there's only one bulb, when it speeds up so you know.

Hardest part in fitting was connecting the earth - which I've put on one of the wiper motor mounts. T'other two wires are just as they are.

But because the cancel ain't totally reliable, I've been thinking about one of these:https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-Pin-Audibl ... SwRgJXh2qd

Thanks for all your tips, but how do I get at the hazard flasher please.I am frightened to pull the dash out any further than a couple of inches and I need a bit more room.

Can you get the wires off the hazard flasher unit or cut them back somewhere you can access. If so, why not leave the old one in and fit a replacement where you can get at it more easily.

If you make it really easy to get at, you'll probably never need to touch it ever again.

Get your hand up behind the dash and disconnect the speedo cable, it'll come out then!

Steve

PS to take the dash out completely there are 3 Rists plugs up in the top right hand corner behind the dash, unplug those and pull the indicator flasher unit from it's clip on the crash pad and you can remove the dash and it's loom in 1 big piece

Hi Steve, thank you very much for the info I will try your first suggestion first, your second suggestion mentions Rist plugs, what are them, never heard of them.
