Glove box light

I came to this spare late number plate light while splitting a couple of bumpers for the end caps.

Anyway, as can be seen it's a push fit into the hole in the glovebox, which I understand there's not actually a part for. While this isn't the right part, it is at least Triumph Dolomite.

I haven't wired it up yet, but I can't see an issue to wire it off the unswitched 12v fuse, with the earth back through the glove box lid switch that is fitted.

I'd always assumed the hole in the top was for the retaining slidey bar thing on the left to go into - never actually checked though!

So it is. Never thought of that. Seen a thread somewhere about someone fitting an allegro or similar light there and just though this might fit.

So what's the switch supposed to operate then?

If it goes in parallel with the door switches, then the cabin light only comes on when the side lights are on, surely.

It'd be quite easy to cut a hole for a light and wire up the switch though, you've got power supplies behind the dash that'd be easy to join on to for the +12

That is certainly what the switch on my glovebox does. There's no sign of it ever having been connected to anything electrical.

Yes, I nearly used that hole until I realised. I fitted a T10 wedge for a small LED globe near top rear corner, best I could find to light up the glovebox without shining directly into one's eyes. Simple to wire up, from memory I used the cigarette lighter and an earth. Used the switch that is there. Works well, but in hindsight a small LED strip, stuck to the roof of the glovebox, pointing downwards might be better still. Geoff

Whilst there is no light shown in the parts books, Ted discovered a light that fits the hole perfectly; from memory, I think it is the one fitted to the Morris Marina.

I think that might be what is said in the thread I vaguely remembered.

But if it fits that hole, where does the slotted bar go when the door is shut?

I’ve done it and bridged off the clocks lighting array through the switch that assists the door to open.
So it only comes on when the lights are switched on.
I used the light that clips to the cigar lighter as it can sit above the slot thus no modification to the bar needed.
Adjustment via the use of a video on the mobile phone confirms it goes off when closed.

Thought that the 2000 had a glovebox light? It's been 35 years since I last looked so I could be easily mistaken or it was a retro fit. Only think it relevant due to it being the same style of dash in the MK2.
