Which is the best way to take the dash out to replace the wood part - take the wires off the instruments at the back of the board or disconnect that the multi-way connectors under the dash?

The 16v Slant 4 engine is more fun than the 3.5 V8, because you mostly drive it on the upslope of the torque curve.

Factory 1977 TR7 Sprint FHC VVC 697S (Now all of, but still needs putting together)

Disconnect the 3 multiplugs every time!

Don't forget to pull the flasher unit out of it's bracket on the crashpad!

Got a 3 pin unit to allow for trailer and warn when one bulb is not working, which is mounted different. Could do with a noiser one though. Also a "you left the lights on again, you dozy old bugger" alarm, which is scotchlocked in and will likely complicate the issue a bit.

I hope you did your due penance for using the dreaded scotchloks! Or maybe you are about to! I always use electronic flasher units these days as they keep the flash rate constant whatever the load. But I found (without much difficulty) a correct 2 pin version that doesn't need an earth wire adding to complicate matters. Still doesn't fit the clip mind :( Can't have everything I guess! My electronic fl units DO make a click noise, but also not terribly loud, In the noisy Carledo cockpit (and me being a bit deaf) it's not easy to hear. I've trained myself to look at the lights when scanning the dash, don't often leave the indicators on!

I know about the issues with scotchlocks. But they have a few, possibly a very few, uses. For e.g., the lights left on alarm is such an easy fit if you use them, and hardly a critical subsystem.
The other place I used them happily is the trailer hitch connector, which I've wired to the loom towards the front of the rear wheel arch. Slightly more critical, but they're out the way there, and get no strain. So it should be fit and forget. The painter just cut the wires (don't they always) when he took the hitch off to paint the car, and I just re-used the same scotchlocks.

But back to the dash: Theoretically, it's just take the speedo drive and mileo cables off, disconnect the air vent pipe, unclip the indicator flasher unit, disconnect the multi-ways, and the dash comes out then?

Exactly that! well you have to take the 4 screws out, but I figure you actually KNEW that!
