Sprint ignition lead diameter

#1 Post by GrahamFountain »

I've collected a number of odd rubber inserts for the Sprint over the years. And finding myself with some time to spare (don't tell 'er indoors or the other boss) I thought I'd have a go at making up a lead set - never bothered before as I've acquired a few of the sets too.

The odd thing is that the 7mm lead I've got is a bit small and the 8mm is tight in the rubbers. Even more odder, the spare dizzy cap with no leads currently in, has two holes that are right for the 8mm and 3 that only take 7mm.

So what's best, silicone rubber to hold the 7mm lead in place or drill out the rubbers (of which I have more than sufficient) and small holes in the cap (which are available) for the 8mm?

The 16v Slant 4 engine is more fun than the 3.5 V8, because you mostly drive it on the upslope of the torque curve.

Decided not to modify the cap, and went for 7mm leads. The two larger holes are only 8mm partway in and the other's I have seem to be the same - I just never noticed.

Had to drill my new cap to fit the 8mm leads and keep the drill apart so I can find it next time!

Turned out I'd fitted the leads to a cracked cap, which stopped working the moment there was any humidity to speak of - a bit limiting in West Lancs. Also, the crimp on plug ends fixed with the hard rubber crimp tool I bought had a better grip on the plugs than the leads.

But I've another cap on order and I'll look at better plug-ends and tooling to see if I can do better. Perhaps specific 7mm crimps rather than 7 or 8mm ones will be better.
