Re: 1850 HL Engine noise after rebuild
Current bolt supply often means bolt lengths are 'rounded up' to match what is offered today; previously, smaller increments in length were available...
Re: 1850 HL Engine noise after rebuild
Hi
Thanks again for all your suggestions
Sorry I haven’t had time to look at the car today, Wife had some jobs she wanted me to do!
Matts Question got me thinking, I have not had the crank reground, but I am not sure if this has ever been done before.
I found one of the old shells and looked at the numbers underneath.
Does this look like a standard shell or oversize? I fitted standard, so if this is the case, this would explain a lot!
What do you think?
Darrell.

Ps
The Flywheel bolts I bought were from Revington TR,
They looked identical to the ones that I removed, and the flywheel did not have any play that I could detect, so hoping this is ok.
Thanks again for all your suggestions

They are 20 thou undersize Darrell, that explains a lot. Don't start the engine again if you fitted standard, what a shame

That looks like your problem that is 0.02 undersized not standard.

Re: 1850 HL Engine noise after rebuild
Hopefully the crank should be ok. What other bits did you fit Darrell pistons? Rings? These might be wrong as well? Can you give pic's of mains and ends brgs? What made you rebuild the engine?

Re: 1850 HL Engine noise after rebuild
Thanks for confirming this.
The bores needed reboring so thought I would do the rest,
The pistons were supplied by the machine shop who rebored the block so I know they are correct
I will order some correct bearings and the engine will not be turning until these fitted.
Thank again for all your help,
It’s very much appreciated.

Don't be down hearted Darrell, you will know next time we are all still learning. At least you had a go and i for one say well done to get it built up and running

Almost made that error myself, fitted standard bearings, then noticed the one's that had been removed where oversize. Fortunately I was able to switch them before I had any problems.

Bugger. Sorry for being right, i thought it sounded big-endy...
Check the mains as well, also did you measure the end float?
It might be better to pull the crank, get it measured and make sure it does not need taking down to the next undersize. At the very least get some plastigauge to check the clearances are correct with the new shells before you run it again.

Thanks
I will check all the things suggested, I re used the original thrust washes so hopefully end float should be ok, but I will re check,
I am trying to see if I still have old main bearings to check the size,
All a learning curve, at least I I now know what the cause and effect are with bearings.
At least I know the engine does actually run.

I'd say that's a result, you could hardly ask for a more positive diagnosis of the issue. We all make mistakes and now you know exactly what your are dealing with its downhill from here. It's the times you think you've figured out a problem, spend time and money changing the faulty parts and it's exactly the flipping same afterwards that get soul destroying. Especially after the 3rd or 4th attempt. (Tinweevil glares in the direction of Mrs weevil's overheating Mini)Manta wrote: ↑Sat Aug 15, 2020 8:02 am Thanks

Re: 1850 HL Engine noise after rebuild
Just another thing Darrell, did you keep all the mains and big end caps in the right order and the right way round? Just thinking for the next set of bearings.

Hi Tony
Yes, I made sure of that as the manual was very specific about that,
Thanks again

They're good quality bearings that you took out; what do their bearing faces look like?
