Hi
They don’t look too bad, but I am having trouble locating the rest and the main ones,
Hoping I wasn’t stupid enough to get rid of them,
I will keep looking tomorrow,
Thanks
Darrell

Just wondering what should the gap be with the plastigauge?matt of the vivas wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 10:32 pm Bugger. Sorry for being right, i thought it sounded big-endy...
Check the mains as well, also did you measure the end float?
It might be better to pull the crank, get it measured and make sure it does not need taking down to the next undersize. At the very least get some plastigauge to check the clearances are correct with the new shells before you run it again.
I am still having problems finding the original bearings
I will get some Plastigauge to see if the main bearings have been done before.

Re: 1850 HL Engine noise after rebuild
Do you have a friendly, trustworthy local machine shop?
If I was in your position I'd drop the crankshaft off at my local place (W. Brown in Halifax) and just ask him to check and measure it and then he'd phone me to let me know if he recommended:
a) nothing
b) polish
c) regrind (and to what size)
Takes the guess work out of it all.
Cheers,
Sam

Hi
I have replaced the Main and Big End bearings with the +0.02 ones, and it sounds a whole lot better.
No rumbling present at all. Thanks again for all your help diagnosing that.
The end float was fine, I was using the old thrust washers so thought this might be the case.
However I was running the engine and intermittently I get a strange noise from the clutch area.
the noise comes and goes, I tried pulling the release bearing away and I can visibly see it is not turning at all in the away position, but the noise I still there, so it is not that,
The noise is present with or without the clutch pressed, but can disappear all of a sudden.
Any ideas what it could be? and more to the point should I be concerned?
Thanks, Darrell

Sounds like the starter is catching the ring gear. I mentioned this before - you could hear it on the first set of videos. Try a spacer between the starter and backplate, to move the starter pinion further from the flywheel.

Hi Darrell, the engine sounds nice now
What do you do to make the noise disappear?

Hi
I fitted a spacer as you suggested, and re started, all ok at first but the noise came back after a little while,
To make the noise disappear, I don’t have to do anything, it just goes. By itself, Once gone it seemed to stay gone, in other words, i get the noise usually after a cold start, but it goes usually after about 4 or five minutes running.
I have come to the conclusion it’s the clutch unit, it was a new old stock Borg and beck one. But as everything seems to work ok with it I am hoping it will settle down when I start to use it.
Everything was torqued down correctly when fitted so I am confident nothing is lose.
Thank again
Darrell.
