Engine number

I’m refreshing a spare/temporary engine for tango and noticed the engine number ends with ‘ss’ , any ideas as to what they stand for ?

I'm sure I've read somewhere that's a factory Supplied Spare (warranty work or something?).

My other block has no engine number at all so I imagine that could have come from rimmers or the like.

I have an " SS xxxx " number on the block of my 1850. I was told it meant "Service Spare" and it certainly has a 10thou overbore.
The curious thing is the number is heavily stamped on the top face of the block so you cannot see it until the head is off. There is no engine number in the usual place.
I do know of one other 1850 stamped up in the same place and also with no ident; on the visible surface of the block.

Is that on the lip by the face of the bores, one the blocks has FGGG stamped on there, can’t remember which one, odd.

Yes, that's the one. See the enclosed photo.
My piston overbore sizes are on the ledge on the right of the photo, out of view.
