1500SE wheels

#1 Post by cliftyhanger »

Are 1500SE wheels the same as late spitfire (5J) wheels? or do the have a different offset? Asking for a friend!

I've just checked and they are different. The SE ones look more "domed". Whether they are interchangeable, I couldn't say - I hadn't the time or inclination to try swapping one from one car to the other.

Definitely different offset-wise. Centres are the same but carry different Dunlop parts numbers.

SE wheels do not work at all well on Spitfires, whereas Spitfire wheels go nicely on Dolomites. On my SE (before the soon to be for sale 15" alloys were fitted), I had SE rims on the front, Spitfire on the back, the difference in offset squaring the track.

5.5Js are my favourites on them.

Do the 5.5 inch Spitfire/GT6 rims fit on a Dolly? I had been looking at a set for my car for ‘winter’ wheels, but thought the offset was all wrong and that they wouldn’t fit??

I had a set on my Vitesse and loved them

Sorry for the mini hijack Clive :D

Yes, they fit comfortably. I've had them with 175/70, 165/70 and 175/65s. No clearance issues.

That’s interesting Jim, thanks for the info.
Was that on standard or lowered ride height?

One car was at stock height, the one that was around 1" lower had the 175/65s, but I couldn't say whether they were really necessary. There's so much variation in sidewall profile in any case.

I've had up to a 7J in standard arch, the main issue (aside from the offset, of course) is the condition of the rear bushes to prevent too much lateral movement.

Thanks again Jim. Useful information, which tells me I was wrong to pass on a set of 5.5s recently then. Because, as mentioned, I thought they weren’t going to fit.

Never mind another set may come my way. I’m in no rush.

Sorry for being late to the game

I have run spitfire/GT6 type 5 1/2 wheels on my Toledo with dolly and indeed sprint axle. No problems with 185/60 tyres, except my arch lip is cut back from when I had MGF wheels so that may be an issue?

Thanks for confirming Clive.

I’ll be on the lookout for another set then. Perfect winter wheels I reckon so no rush just yet.

I have 2 spare SE wheels and was planning to use one for the spare on my own SE. They do seem to be different and I’m wondering if one is a spitfire wheel - would anyone have the original part numbers so I can check which is which?

Thanks
