Well its been a long wait but as of today my dolly become tax exempt.

handy as i live on top of the ULEZ zone.

Since the last Dolomite was built in 1980, EVERY Dolomite is now VED exempt, (subject in some cases to a heritage cert being obtained) though a few hundred will have to wait a while for MOT exemption.

That's surprising as my Bentley (December 1980) is Mot exempt but not VED exempt.

At the risk of sounding a bit daft, is it as simple as going to the Post Office with the V5 and ask for it to be reclassified as Historic? My local PO (who do VED normally) refused to do it and insisted I had to send it to the DVLA - with inevitable delays. The car is insured and has a current MOT. Thanks.

If it was registered at any time before Jan 8th 1981, it's as simple as that, just toddle down to the PO, they SHOULD know what to do.

If it was registered AFTER that date, for whatever reason (and quite a few were) the process is more involved. First you need a heritage certificate with a build (or factory dispatch) date in 1980 or earlier then you must send the V5 and the heritage cert (a colour copy is ok) with a covering letter to DVLA at Swansea.

I tried this the day before yesterday; went to the post office with my V5C which states first registration at Aug 1980. The PO system, which apparently accesses DVLA direct, would not give the option to give tax exemption for historic status. Even though I had, as a precaution, taken my heritage certificate as evidence, which shows a build date of June1979, the post office said there was nothing they could do about it.

I phoned the DVLA who said "that's strange" and told me to send in my V5C and original heritage certificate, which I did yesterday. I guess wait and see what happens.

I simply changed the taxation class on the V5 to Historic and signed it. The Post Office scanned it, kept that part, and gave me a receipt showing it was taxed for twelve months at zero cost. No other paperwork was necessary. Make sure it is a main Postt office, smaller ones don't know what you are talking about.
The Bentley should be historic from April the 1st, try again.

thats the PO not knowing what to do, fill in the change of taxation class section to state 'historic' the PO then sends it of and issues you with a receipt saying zero paid its that simple.
the DVLA will show as still taxable because if hadn't been changed on the V5.

Oh well, I've sent the V5C and heritage certificate off to the DVLA now, hopefully they will sort it, fingers crossed.
