Carburettor HS6 - Vacuum Pod Connection

Hello All

I am after a quick answer to hopefully a quick question and not too dumb a question please... :)

Have a sprint with standard HS6 carbs, that after some discussions with a friendly local member, I know understand that the car has what is known as ported vacuum. I will add that I don't profess to understand fully what this actually means BTW, but I am in the process of improving my knowledge!!

My question is in respect of the connection on the carburettor, where the vac pod tube from the distributor is connected. It goes down behind the butterfly in the carb body so it is difficult to see, but should it be completely vertically hollow? By this I mean should you be able to pop something down it until it hits the bottom of the carb body wall?? I have attached a couple of pic's to help illustrate the bit I am talking about with a couple of items inserted in the connection but as you can see they will not fully drop down.

I am assuming it should be hollow to allow air to pass through but as you can see mine does not seem vertically hollow so maybe a little blocked, although I can see light through it when i insert a very small torch with the butterfly open.... So before I proceed, I wanted to be sure it should actually be vertically hollow. Or does the hole drop vertically and then end horizontially somehow?

I hope I have described this well enough ...........

It is a vertical hole through to the body, it may give the appearance of being on an angle as the nail may be touching the top of the throttle butter fly.

Hi James; That is good attention to detail, I've learned something today ! I have the remains of an old HS6 carb; here and I also tried this out. This part of the carb seems to be made of 2 co-axial tubes. The upper part I can get a 1.7mm drill shank through and the lower part through the carb; body I can get a 1.1 mm drill through. And Malcolm is quite right, the brass throttle disc seems to stop the 1.1 mm drill going right through, unless the throttle is opened a small amount.
Interestingly the drills brought out quite a bit of dirt and gunge.
