Finally getting round to updating my V5C with the Nissan engine number. I checked the DVLA website and I need to provide one of the following as evidence…
- replacement engine receipt
- evidence from Nissan
- insurance inspection report
- confirmation from a garage on headed paper
I did my engine swap a few years ago and it had those rules.
I took photos of:
- the installed engine inc number
- the car it came from (inc empty engine bay)
- the car it went into (engine pictured)
And sent in:
- letter explaining what was going from what
- the v5 of the donor
- the v5 of the recipient
All went ok... Donor came back with no engine number any more, recipient had expected engine number.
May not be as easy if you don't own the donor but if you bought the engine I'm sure you can find some sort of receipt even if it's an eBay printout or something.

If you are in The Historic Taxation Class you don't have to provide any of the above, the trouble is that most workers at DVLA have no idea what the rules are, so when you send the paperwork in for the engine change, you need to put a note in with it pointing that fact out to them.
Currently over 35 years worth of fixing 35 boxes.

When I built the Carledo the legislation had just been introduced and was being rigourously enforced. That was in 2011 and there was then no historic status for my 73 car.
Since I had no provenance at all for the engine i'd fitted and was worried about potential fraud charges for running a 2.0 in a car taxed as a 1300. I had a bit of a nightmare. But it turns out you can, if need be, get the conversion engine verified by a relevant owners club official. The Local TSSC area organiser did mine, so I could probably do yours.
However, you may not need to. As Harvey says, the rules have changed since then and our cars are now "historic" with the perks that come with it. Also the legislation is still on the books, but is barely being enforced nowadays as the reason it was introduced (to catch stolen engines being sold) didn't work.
Several people I know have sent in similar V5s for amendment recently, simply stating the replacement engine number and capacity and had them returned, correctly amended, without comment.
Though I have considerable provenance of the Dolomega's engine (like the log book of the donor in my name) i'm going to try exactly this shortly, a) because i'm lazy and b) to find out if it works! I haven't done it yet as i wanted to get it MOT'd and taxed Historic before opening that can of worms, which i've now done. So any time now, just personal inertia to overcome!

The reason this rule came in was partially to help prevent ringing and stolen engines being fitted and to make sure people were paying the correct VED band.
as said send off the paper work with a covering letter stating engine number etc and that its in an historic car, they might ask for a pic.
As long as the engine hasn't come from a car that was stolen or written off as a Cat A you'll be fine
The DVLA are not that strict with older cars, its newer, valuable cars they are getting anal about lately

Car 1 - PO will post the V5C to DVLA free of charge, not even charging me for an envelope or a stamp. The form has the change of Class to Historic and the engine number / capacity change. This car was taxed FOC at the same time. I’m hoping to get a new V5C stating that the Class is Historic with the new engine details.
Car 2 - I was so surprised that the transaction was COMPLETELY FREE that I also asked the PO to post the form to DVLA and change the Class to Historic, but to remain SORN. I’m hoping to get a new V5C stating that the Class is Historic and it will still be SORN’d.
