handbrake switch

The brake warning light on my 1980 Sprint is only activated by the switch that detects if one the brake circuits is leaking. Looking at the wiring diagram I believe that this is correct for this model.

I think that the handbrake warning light was on earlier models. However the wire for the handbrake warning light is present. I guess they never changed the wiring loom when they made the change.

Since I now mainly drive automatics I do have a tendency to leave the handbrake on hence the warning light would be useful. I am planning to install the handbrake switch so that the warning light comes on if either switch is operated.

Is the handbrake lever the same between the models and its it easy to fit the switch. I couldn't see an obvious place to mount a switch. Any photos would be great.

I would start by just earthing down the cable that you believe provides the handbrake warning as this all that the switch does to bring on the warning light.

If this works you need to obtain a switch part number 144432 this may be difficult to find. It is held in place by one very small screw which goes into the side of the lever. I do believe that a spitfire handbrake switch will also work but the connection is on the other side of the switch part number TKC3894 but again it is difficult to find.

Shorting the wire to earth does cause the brake warning light to come on. It looks like Robsport has the switches in stock. Do I only need the switch or are there any levers or brackets that are also needed. Where does the switch fit.

The switch fits on the nearside of the handbrake lever with the operating knob of the switch going through a hole in the lever. When the handbrake is operated it comes up and pushes the operating knob in so causing the contact to make.

The screw that hold the switch in is very small.

The new switch arrived from Robsport. I had to bend the copper connection out a bit to make it work but its now fitted and seems to be working fine. Hopefully it will stop me burning out the rear brake shoes.

Many thanks for the update as I was wondering how the project was going and I am glad that you have been able to identify a supplier who can supply the switch for the rest of the dolomite community.
