I've had many Sprints pass through my hands, early and late. Only one had a spacer on the starter motor. Yes the top bolt is a pain but after removing it many times you get used to it.
Sprintless for the first time in 35+ years. ... Still Sprintless.

Top nut is easily accessed with a 3/8" drive socket on a wobble bar and extension(s) long enough to allow you to use the ratchet in the gap between engine and radiator...it literally feels its way home on it's own. You need 3/8" drive in order for the extension to pass the block at the right attitude. For replacement, use grease in the socket to hold the nut and replacement is almost as easy. If the blower motor is removed, you can also feel it in to place by using a fore finger over the back plate.
There's no rhyme or reason behind the spacers, some starters need them, most don't.

This is the first time ive used a wobble bar,great idea tho
