My spare Overdrive was not working.

#1 Post by Richard the old one »

It took me a very long time to work out why my spare O/D was not working so I am wondering if any other owners have come across this problem?

The main hydraulic casting has split open at the bottom of one of the operating pistons.

Never seen that before Richard  It must have had casting fault as there isn't that much pressure.

Mad Mart has an overdrive in its component pieces which belongs to the Tilson estate; he might be able to build one up for you with it if you wanted to maintain a spare?

Many thanks for suggesting that as I would be happy to donate something into John Tilson's estate so I will discuss the possibility with Mad Mart.

My 1500HL overdrive casting is also giving me problems, the alloy casing has split where the bolts are driven in to secure it to the car. Some very worrying cracks in the alloy. The trouble is that these parts are like hens teeth, very pricey and impossible to obtain; I'm not sure what the answer is really.

I assume that it is just the rear section that you are looking to replace. I have been looking at the official parts catalogue and it indicates that the j type O/D rear section needs to be different if it is to be fitted to a sprint compared to the type fitted on 1500, 1500HL and 1850HL cars. I assume this is because of the gear change rear section attaches to the O/D.

I am learning more about J types all the time.

I do not know what model Mad Mart has in bits.

Mad Mart also suggested that to me so I may see if can find someone who can do it and what the cost would be.

My local garage that does my MoT's arranged for the defective O/D to be welded up so my next task will be to rebuild the unit and give it a run. See attached photo's of the welding repair.
