Yes,....
Trevor is correct. That's enough of the thread hijack guys.
Why not start a thread in the general section where you can pursue your interest in playing with words
without clogging Dave's thread?
Thanks,
Ian.

That sounds like a good idea Ian. I dont think or hope Dave was upset by the "hijack" It was after all just a bit of light hearted humour..... Which in this day and age is sadly lacking.
I will start a joke of the day thread tomorrow All jokes welcome (within reason) of course. This type of thread (joke of the day) has gone down very well on another forum i frequent, and has been going for quite a while, and has made me laugh loads
So guys... Get your dad jokes at the ready.
Tony.

Re: NYE 751L - 1972 1850 auto
Dave, as your Dolomite has not run for quite a while it will be worth cleaning the points, rotor arm and contacts within the distributor cap. I used to find that these would often get corrosion on them and contribute to a poor spark after a while of non use, especially if the car is kept outdoors.
I found a folded over small piece of fine emery paper 2" long and 1/2" wide folded along the length to make it 1/4" wide worked well. Abrasive side out of course. With the points closed you can drag the folded abrasive paper between them a few times to clean them up in place while the faces remain parallel. Any deposits in the distrib.cap can be carefully scraped off with a flat bladed screw driver or similar tool.

Re: NYE 751L - 1972 1850 auto
Time for an overdue update:
I must admit that after finding a rusty NSR jacking point dampened my enthusiasm somewhat. I'm under pressure to get Dolly moved from outside the house where it has been standing for the past few years. I've been sidetracked by various project cars (Vauxhall Vectra, VW Polo, the BMW, Vauxhall Corsa and the Celica). I have use of a single garage over the road which is currently occupied by the Celica. Once it has had replacement tyres and the new exhaust fitted I can then get the Dolly in the garage and get to work. One sensible thing I did was to leave the battery disconnected so it won't be totally dead. My first priority is to get it running again. Because I have messed all the settings up, I'll have to start from scratch. The static timing should be somewhere close because I did get the rotor arm position right for No. 1 cylinder on the compression stroke.

Re: NYE 751L - 1972 1850 auto
It has been such a LONG time since my last post:
I've finally started to try get this engine running again. I had the replace the battery because it was bulging at the sides! I got myself a remote starter switch (Sealey VS205) so I can crank the engine while I'm working on it. Starting at the coil, I was getting no spark from the king lead out of the coil. I ordered a new coil and condenser from Wins. It was still the same. I fitted the new condenser I bought and a set of points from my stash of 1850 parts. Still no spark. I had to replace the terminal on the wire that is connected the the -ve side of the coil that goes to the points. My next thought is to replace the HT leads. I tried a spare king lead that was in the boot and that made no difference.
The front tyres have deteriorated the the point where they won't hold air. The rear tyres still hold air but will also need replacing. I've found more rust in the jacking points. Trevor has reached out to me and has kindly offered to help me so I will be taking him up on that offer.
I've been documenting this recent work on my YouTube channel. The link in my signature below.

Re: NYE 751L - 1972 1850 auto
Yes, it is overdue an update Alun.
I bought a new coil and condenser from Wins and fitted them both along with a set of points from my stash of 1850 parts. Still no spark from the coil when I crank the engine. I'm gonna have to renew the entire ignition system. I've found for in the other so-called jacking points so they will need to be repaired. I finally fitted the starter inhibitor switch I bought many moons ago. There will be another Dolomite video on my YouTube channel documenting my recent (lack of) progress.

Did you already buy a multimeter? I know you are a fan of replacing parts and harnesses till you finally by accident have a spark again but with a multimeter its 15 minutes, 3 measurements and the problem of no spark is diagnosed and then you only have to replace the faulty part or connect all properly.

I agree with Jeroen. Do some actual diagnosis, it's much quicker than just randomly replacing parts.

Agree with above, plus the fact you will know what bit is wrong/broke.

It's actually a desperate cry to help, being on page 122 and still not being able to use the car.
