Headlining transplant...

Hi chaps, if I had a car with a really good headlining, is it possible to take it out and transplant it into another car?

Failing that, I need a trimmers to put a full interior in VA138 including carpets and headlining, any ideas please...and don't say Aldridge, they have an 18 month waiting list!

It is possible to transplant a headlining from one car to another, but with age the head lining becomes brittle as you remove the lining from round the screens and doors rubbers there a good chance it will tear

Yes if you are careful you can do it and I think it is easier than fitting a new headlining as it is already 'formed' to the roof. As said they can be brittle so you need to be careful.

I am fitting a new one from Newton Commercial, quality seems good but you have to deal with the creases etc from packaging.

When I painted the Dolomega I took the perfect original headliner out and replaced it afterwards (with help from the mighty Cliff)

A good powerful hairdryer is a useful tool to help with the task.

Cliff has a big waiting list too, but might be shorter than Aldridges!

The worst thing i've found with the Newton headliner, is that the material is about twice as thick as the original stuff, which makes it a pain where there are 2 thicknesses at seams. Not impossible to deal with, just a nuisance. Especially getting furflex over the seam bumps round the doors.

I have just patiently released the perimeter of the headlining of a '73 car and except where it had been 'nipped' to go around a corner I escaped without any of the brittle areas tearing; fortunately where it did tear is where it is glued to 'flat' metal above. It is only not wanting to further disturb a bumble bee nest until they depart which has halted my progress.

My only advice would be to leave it in situ until you are ready to transplant as once removed from a car they can deteriorate surprisingly quickly for something which just sits there, seemingly inert!

Who's this Cliff you speak of Steve?

Cliff is Cliff Griffiths, or "Cliff the trimmer" who has appeared on many episodes of "Car SOS" on the telly, one time foreman at Aldridge and now has his own shop in Bilston Wolverhampton. He's also a good friend and fellow Triumph enthusiast who I've known for over 35 years.
