Tolly Sprint

#1 Post by Mad Mart »

It's been a while but this morning a new project turned up. Well half a project to be more accurate. A friend of mine, who I used to go to trackdays with, started this project more than ten years ago but after starting a family hasn't had the time to do anymore to it in that time (I'm sure many of you can relate to that). Out of the blue one day, a couple of months ago, I got a text from him and things progressed from there.

Mart

What are your plans, is it going to be a road car or track ?

It's going to be a track car. I forgot to mention, I'm finishing the restoration for my friend but he will have it back when I've got it road worthy. He may want to sell it on at a later date.

2 Door makes a great track car, both lighter and stiffer than it's big brother. You can do more with less power!

Just pay lots of mind to the rear spring rates, they don't like being too hard sprung with having so little weight over the rear axle.

:wary: another one which is neither one thing or another.

Makes you wonder if there will be any cars left how they were intended to be when you look at this forum.

Chris told me yesterday that he had installed double valve springs but as he has an STR091 cam I advised him to let me remove them and just use the standard springs, as this will just deprive him of a few BHP. They are only really needed for the STR139 cam.

Chris bought various bits from me (probably 10+ years ago!) and told me he was building up a white 2dr. Do you know whether Tara is still with us?

Yes, he has just moved Tara to his new house. I believe he is keen to sell her.

Fitted the new fuel pump this morning. Fuel regulator on its way.

Couldn't make up my mind where to fit the oil cooler but I think this is about the only place it will fit.

Any suggestions?

I took the dizzy out today as it needed cleaning and I thought I would check the points whilst I was at it. I had noticed that the dizzy would only turn about a quarter of the slot either way. So I filed the mating surfaces of the bracket & dizzy but that didn't make any difference. If I pulled the dizzy out by about 1mm. it would turn the whole way. So I shone a torch into the dizzy hole and could see what looked like part of the block casting sticking out a bit. You can just make it out on the right of the hole...

Image

After a bit of filing it worked fine. I've never come across that before in the 40+ years I've been playing with Sprints. Any thoughts anyone?

It doesn't look like a spring Dave, it was just a bit of the casting which I filed down. :)

Some more pics of progress.

I had to fit a heat shield...

Fuse box & clutch reservoir...

Then fitted the carbs this morning

I've run out of 1" x 5/16" UNC bolts for the inlet manifold, so I couldn't finish bolting those up today.
