Fitting the Jackshaft

#1 Post by JerryTR5 »

Why is the BL workshop manual for the Sprint so insistent that the jackshaft is fitted in a particular orientation?
Extract: "turn the jackshaft until the scribed line A is equidistant between bolts B & C".
The gear for the water pump will fit any old way, as will the fuel pump cam. The dizzy might need a bit of manipulation to mesh gears but it's difficult to see how it would not fit with the jackshaft in any orientation and still allow enough movement for timing.
Searching old posts I can see the point about the dizzy having to line up with the oil pump drive shaft.
I marked the gears before dissassembly and it certainly was not lined up as per the manual. I'm a bit baffled.

Hi,
You will find that the distributor has a limited range of adjustment. If you follow the manual the screws should be close to the middle of the slots. You are correct that the water pump and fuel pump work in any position.
