Newbie arrived.

#1 Post by Kelharri »

Hi all,

Just purchased my first sprint at 50😜 it has a clean body, starts and drives but will require some work to bring it up to my standard, 8 previous owners 35k.

Previously an owner has installed stag hubs and wheels and 14”tyres, I want to reverse this to original set up, are these parts any use to sell onwards?

The engine has had some work done to it also bills and receipts but done no mileage,it is running twin 48 webbers some popping and banging going on here, definitely not suitable for this I believe they are too large so will want to go smaller on the carbs would these be of interest to anyone here ?

I will no doubt be needing some advice here on this and looking for some parts like a original steering wheel or a recommendation for a wooden one the dash wood and top caps to the doors needs a clean up and it would benefit from newer door cards ? Are these available still, also quarter light rubbers, rear window rubber seal too.

Missing one of the vents under the roof at the rear too…

On the whole I am happy with the purchase would be happy to hear back if anyone has any comments thanks …

Hi and welcome, regarding the Weber's 48's with the manifold and carbs you should be able to sell on eBay for a good money , manifold on it's own is about the £350 or more and the carbs easily £500 plus !!.

I can help with the missing rear vent and an OE steering wheel, also OE wheels and hubs (front at least). I have also just received what I hope will be the final samples for approval of the Club's remanufacture scheme for the quarter light rubbers...

An alternative to losing the 48's would be to source a camshaft which better suits them...

Door cards, you're looking at good second hand as the best available.

Thanks.

I was thinking 40s might do but will need to have that verified by mechanics based on the engine build as it’s supposed to be 2.1 litre and the camshaft is quoted as a piper with vernier calliper, lightened flywheel and balanced crankshaft certainly not running right at the moment with those carbs but will be lumpy with that cam regardless.

My car runs 48s with a STR91 group 2 cam, it runs very well. Your carbs may just need a clean and then setting up properly on a rolling road.

Whatever you do you will need the carbs set up on a rolling road to get the best out of them, so I would see what can be done with the current set up before changing.

Hi - I telephoned the previous owner to give him some advice as I did not really wish to buy the car (I own some ex works cars and have had approaching 100 Sprints in my time - sad disease, I know!!!!) and went through the specification of the engine as far as he knew it, and the symptoms he had, which did not suggest oil burning as he initially thought, but poor combustion and over fuelling. I believe he gave you my number, so happy to have a chat if that helps you. I had offered to swap him some carbs/set-up, etc. or you as the new owner and adjust with cash either way for the 48's. Anyway, if you need any advice or help, give me a bell or pm through here if you can. You have bought a very nice car IMHO.

The first thing I would suggest is rebuild the carbs with Ethanol proof rebuild kit,, and then replace any rubber fuel line, included braided with ethanol proof pipe, Its becoming all too common to hear of and to see photos of classics with engine fires. as the ethanol is destroying the structure of the rubber. then hoses fail. which all too often ends in fire,
And, possibly people dont know this, ethanol is corrosive to certain metal parts, I think its ally or zinc based metals, ask anybody who runs a drag car on 100% alcohol (Methanol) they run a separate tank of petrol flush the system before they put the car away, otherwise new carbs and pumps every meeting is an expensive hobby.

I'll second the final sentence, I made a cheeky last minute offer on it myself, but less than the PO was looking for!
