I've now got a wiring diagram but have found two things i don't get

1/ the boot light only has 1 wire to it (purple) how does the switch (purple/white) connect to the boot lamp ?
2/ By the passenger side rear wheel arch there's a block connection think it 6 wires joined what's that for

The 6 wire thing sounds like a dimmer unit. Not all cars had it and can be troublesome I believe. Bit vauge sorry.

On an early(ish) car it could be the night dimming relay OR just a junction in rear loom? Hard to say. It's easy to patch out the relay without changing much.

I added all those, plus a reversing camera, rear foglights and a towbar adaptor (no scotchloks on my watch!)

To achieve this rather large expansion in wire quantity, I used a pair of busbars mounted on the L/H/R boot floor support and divided the front/rear loom there so I could take any supply I wanted from spare tags - up to 4 extra from each feed!

I forgot about rear fog lights that would have been a good add on, i run my rear camera wire separate from the main loom just in case there's any interference
What camera are you using ? I went for one that fits over rear number plate
Still got to fine a way of getting an earth to those rubbish rear bulb holders

I was told that you can solve the lamp holder earthing problem by soldering as shown in the following photograph and since doing it I have not had a problem.

Just ensure all is spotlessly clean and tin the copper strip with a bit of care you can get them all done.

I fitted my high level brake light in the middle rear vent I did a write up in Dolly mixture a while ago.

I had this problem a bit recently, my old soldering gun had given me stirling service since I was about 12, building brass chassis for bespoke slot cars. But sometime last year I finally exhausted my supply of 1960s Ersin multicore fluxcored solder and had to buy some!

I immediately noticed a falloff in my soldering quality and couldn't work out why. My son in law, who does this sort of thing for a living, put me right, modern solder doesn't contain lead like the antique stuff i'd been using and the new stuff has a higher melting point, my old 55w gun was no longer powerful enough! I've bought a new and more powerful 100w gun and the quality has returned!

I agree about the efficacy of modern solder. In addition, the flux contained within modern solder is much less aggressive than the old stuff.

When soldering ‘difficult’ stuff like the rear dolomite lamp-holders, I have found that a small spot of plumber’s flux is beneficial.

Had another go at the rear lamp bulb holders today, Think i hadn't cleaned them properly, this time it worked,
Are there more than one type around as one off my bulb holders had an earth connection ?

Never seen one on a Dolomite with a factory earth connection. They are designed to work with the ground running through the sprung fitting tangs and thence into the lamp bodies, wherafter a wire carries the ground to an earth point.

But the Dolomite is not alone in using these bulbholders, besides the Spitfire mk IV and 1500 they were also used in 2000MKII and PI, Stags and TR Models. As well as Marinas and probably loads more that I can't currently think of. (undoubtedly Lotus for one!) But I also had very similar bulbholders which DID carry an earth tag in several of my assorted Volvo 240s, maybe you have one of those!

If you are careful you can still buy lead based solder, but most suppliers (eg. RS) won't sell it to private customers, only business customers. Although they don't check if you just indicate you are a business but pay with a personal debit/credit card. By default they'll try and sell you the lead-free stuff, which is fine on new stuff (I use it on new build PCB projects), but bog-all use for repairing stuff that's already been soldered with lead based solder.
