SPRINT gearbox removal in situ?

#1 Post by tony g »

Ive never removed just the box leaving engine in, will the box clear the exhaust down pipe? Rest of the system is off and gearstick out etc. Im using a 2 post ramp so can lower subframe a bit if needed.

Cheers

Yes, on a Sprint you’ll need to lower the back of the subframe. Undo the top radiator hoses as well else they’ll possibly tear when the engine pivots

Do the front subframe bolts need to be slackened too? Do the rear subframe bolts need to be completely free? ie nuts off. Had a mare earlier with box off the engine but no room to do much. (my lambda sensor was hitting the box). Had to bolt it all back up and remove downpipe in situ lol.

Previously I've taken the rear nuts off as the additional space helps when aligning during reassembly, and yes, I think I recall slackening the front nuts to allow the frame to rotate.

Got the bugger out!. Slackened front subframe, removed rear frame nuts completely, held the engine up to the subframe height with a piece of plate so engine dipped down with the subframe. Also top tip from someone was to undo the rack clamps so I did that too. Wiggled the box out and now ready for swapping bits over to the new box (I have a different loom set up and also saab concentric slave in the bell housing. ). Will prob tidy up some other wiring and pipes while theyre accessible .

When I put the sprint box in the TR7 Toledo we managed get it in from above with the subframe in place, but we had to jack up the back of the engine to get it aligned. Just got in with barely a mm to spare. Would definitely not recommend, many scraped knuckles and curses in the process. I’ll just drop the sodding subframe next time!
