Any thoughts on the squealing from my 1850 Dolly engine would be very much appreciated
My engine has started to produce a very high-pitched squeal when its running & stationary.
I have recently changed the water-pump with a new pump from Rimmers & wonder if this may be the cause of the noise or this may just be a coincidence. I'm sure i used the right thicknesses of gaskets between the block & pump -housing when i replaced the pump so I don't think the pump impellor is rubbing on the pump housing. The pump impellor is the right one for the car & matches the one that it replaced.
I have removed the alternator & fan-belt & confirmed that this is not the cause of the noise.
Originally the noise only occurred when the engine had warmed up, but recently it started as soon as the engine started.
The noise seems to change pitch if the carbs are rocked/flexed, but the noise doesn't go away.
Could the bearings on the pump be spinning in the block & if this is likely are there any fixes to resolve this issue?.
Any help on this annoying problem would be appreciated

It could possibly be an air leak - i.e. effectively a whistle. You could try spraying WD40, brake cleaner or similar around the carbs and inlet manifold joints with the engine running and the engine "squealing" and see if anything changes. If it does then you could use a "listening" tube to pin point the leak. (Listen tube is just a length of plastic tube, you hold one end to your ear and then "probe" around the areas of interest, any noise of air leaking or squealing/whistling will be very apparent in your ear when near to/over the problem area.

I had a similar issue with my Dolomite sprint. I turned out to be a leek on the rocker cover gasket. Run your finger around the rocker cover. when it stops then that's where the leek is. Replaced the gasket with plenty of sealant. Job Done

My suggestion would to get a large screwdriver, place one end next to the waterpump area and the other on your ear. Just to listen to see (well hear technically) if the brothers have sold you a pump with knackered bearings.

Thx for the advice on my engine sequel.
After a lot of thinking & investigating this problem I think ive tracked-down the source of the problem.
I removed the water pump that i had replaced a while ago & just before the squeal started & noticed what looks like there are oil starvation marks on the end of the spindle of the pump where this fits in the bronze bush which is located in the block below the jack-shaft.
Looking at the bush i've concluded that when i replaced it with the pump i didn't drive it fully into the block & it was sitting about 1.5-2mm above the slight recess around the bush hole in the block.
My thinking is that oil should drip into the bush via gravity as its a blind hole & lubricate the lower end of the pump shaft. As the bush was sitting slightly above recess the oil couldn't drip into the bush.
I couldn't find any guidance in my manuals as to the correct position of the bush, but a cross-section diagram in the manual does show the bush sitting below the recess in the block.
I extracted the old bush by gently chiselling it out with a punch along the spilt in the bush. When it was extracted I noticed a very slight lip at the bottom end of the blind bush hole. I assume this limits how far the bush can be drifted into the block. I have drifted in a new bush & gently rubbed down the pump shaft to remove the very slight marks caused by the oil starvation. The marks were only just visible.
I will pre-fill the bush hole with engine oil before i refit the water pump so its got plenty of lubrication when i start up the engine.
Im now waiting for some silicon grease to arrived so i can lubricate the o-rings in the pump, refit the pump & shim & fit the cover, fit the inlet manifold, carbs etc & then run the engine to check if this solves my problem.
I will let you know if this works as other members may experience this same issue in the future.
