Sprint 1/2 shaft

I am putting together my sprint rear axle and notice that the collar around the 1/2 shaft that the bearing sits against, has bee removed at some
stage, I thought this was fixed on the shaft so the axle was locked in place in the housing,.
I dont know what the correct position of this collar on the shaft relative to the outside shoulder edge. My other shaft may also not be in the right
position so dont want to use that as a reference
Should this be locked on somehow, or what stops the shaft coming out of the axle?

Its OK, I found the shaft has a very slight shoulder on it. the collar pushes up to it.
