Water pump delete

Greetings all,

I have started a project recently and I am at the stage of the tear down .
I have started to remove the engine and in removing the water pump I noticed one of the fines have deteriorated.

I have read that there is a brass plug that can be fitted but I have not seen where these can be purchased. Does it come as a complete kit or would items have to be purchased separately?

Also, is there an issue of any sorts with the standard pump? I would be happy to purchase a new standard item if they are all good.

Would appreciate the advice on this one.

Hello mate - the brass bung can be bought from the club - if you can manage to locate the list on this site, despite being a sticky, it's pretty well hidden!

You would only use the bung if you were planning on replacing the WP with an electrical item such as the Davis Craig - if that was the case you would also need the restrictor that goes in between the inlet manifold and the water pump housing - I was sure that was also for sale from the club but now can't see it on the list.

Do a search for member Carledo on here, and message him, he'll tell you all you need to know - if he doesn't know it, then the subject likely doesn't exist!

The replacement by-pass tube is no longer available from the club, just the bung. It was too costly to get these made in small numbers. Some people just use core plugs to block off the top of the water pump housing and the inlet manifold.

As for the standard pump, there is nothing wrong with them if the car is being used for "normal" driving.

The pumps are easy enough to rebuild, and quality kits are available for not a lot of cash. The only "tricky" bit is teh need for a lathe to reface the impellor. And if your impellor is damaged, you need a new or good used one.
Personally, I would rather recondition one myself rather than new. At least you know what quality teh components are! LD parts supply the kits, and as "unbranded" or "high quality" . Others also supply the kits.

Its no use to me as I have 12 vane pumps in my engines so its for sale.

I think you'll find that is a SAAB impeller...can be used in a Dolomite slant 4 so long as the 12v cover is used with it as the angle cut on the vanes is the same as the 12v Dolomite pump...

I have ready machined used impellers available if Clive's is not of interest and can also let you have a good quality rebuild kit as I keep a couple on the shelf

if you still want to go down the electric water pump route. I recently bought a restrictor by-pass from Robsport, included new o-rings. About a fiver.

Well it came in this NOS box so I believe it is a Sprint/TR7. I just swapped the inpellor to a 12 vane and its been running happily in my engine for a few years.

I could have sworn it was Clive who’d offered that impeller Russ, apologies for misnaming you…at least in the modern world I didn’t assume your gender!!

Yes, that part number is SAAB, Dolomite/TR7/Stag are GWP206 (12 vane) and GWP207 (6 vane) but the only difference between all three is the impeller and as I say with the correct matching cover they are all cross compatible. I happily fitted a NOS SAAB 6v pump to a Sprint I owned using a 12 vane cover with no issues (you can’t do that with a Dolomite 6v and 12v cover!!)
