Why has this not sold?

Ok I haven’t seen it in the flesh, or driven it. But assuming it is what the vendor says it is, surely that’s an excellent value, usable classic for 5k? A rally replica is not everyone’s cup of tea of course but what other decent classic can you buy for that price these days!?

Just shows that the Dolly is still under appreciated I guess.

It's not really a rally "replica" though, is it? It's best described as a "modified Dolomite", but still seems a lot of car for the money and it will sell eventually.

Ok rally ‘homage’ or whatever you want to call it. It still looks like a fun classic for not much money, and has been advertised for a while.

Maybe a bit of exposure on here may help with a sale?

I am sure I spoke to somebody who had seen it, and walked away as it wasn't very good.
Modified cars are hard to sell unless well done, and this one isn't. Look at the oil cooler installation! What idiot did that? Rear show cage? All very tacky.
I think this is a car that will be nigh on impossible to shift unless the price drops by 50%.

I'm a firm advocate of the principle of 'it's your car, do what you want with it' but that doesn't stop me wincing every time I read that someone else is going to 'personalise' their car be it through engine change, colour change or what ever, as all to often that owner then inadvertently becomes the last owner; as Clive says a modified car is very difficult to sell. How many Dolomites have we read about receiving MX5 engines...and why do we not often see them afterwards?

Cars modified 'properly' usually take years to complete like Darren Faulkner's and Richard 4040's and as a consequence of that invested time and money are rarely offered for sale afterwards. This car was no doubt a cherished project for whoever created it, and clearly it will have taken time, but the appeal of the changes made are very personal. Where the changes have been made without publicity on fora such as this, there is also no provenance as to the quality of the modifications and whether implications have been thought through...is this still running a 1300 axle, for instance?

You can probably answer your own question though, as you've just bought a Dolomite Bish; why didn't you buy this one?

I actually quite like it - I’ve a bit of a soft spot for an ugly duckling or something a bit different - and thought it may have been a good base car for someone. Of course it would need to have some of the previous owners less than tasteful, or practical, mods removed but I would have given it a viewing had I not wanted a Sprint.

I know it has been for sale for a while. I guess it’s not that good when you actually get to see it in the flesh as cliffhanger has said and that’s why it’s still there.

This car is for sale at a garage not far from me. I have driven past it a few times but I have always been in a hurry with work and not had time to stop and take a look at it. It was originally for sale for about £10,000, and has been on the market for ages now, so I suspect that it has gone stale, even though the price has now dropped considerably.

I like the 7" sealed beams, harkens to classic Alfa Romeo, but I would have tried to also retain the 5 3/4" inners...

So the bonhams link shows the car sold for less than 5k in March 2024.

Bought by someone who thought they’d try to double their money, and subsequently put it up for 10k? Looks like whoever has it will be lucky to get their money back now.

Even though the more I read about it the worse it sounds - I still quite like it. I can’t quite put my finger on why that is though. Maybe I feel sorry for it a bit…..

It's originality that sells an old("classic") car these days, people (generally) buy a "classic" car that reminds them of perhaps a car their parents owned when they were a child, or perhaps a car they saw on tv or had the brochure hanging on their bedroom wall.

Modified cars just don't tick that box so they go unsold. A lesson to be learned there I feel.
