1850 flywheel allignment

Hello all not sure i understand this in the Haynes manual.
I can see the marks in the manual.
But whats the idea behind that

Am i right in thinking the crankshaft could be in 1 of 2 (180 deg) postions with the marks aligned

My 1850 is an auto... so no flywheel so I have no experience.
Checked my 1850 workshop manual, no mention of alignment in the removal/refit instructions.

I understand the 1/2 and the "|" marks are called "balance marks "
Yes, you are quite right the flywheel on the 1850 manual box can go round in 2 ways. The correct way round is when the 1/4 mark at the front of the crankshaft is aligned with the grating on the timing cover ( pot 1 piston is at TDC ) and the flywheel marks are at the top and aligned.

Now I know they always aren't aligned.! When we did Kyle's engine ( early 1850 ) the flwheel marks were 180 degrees out. We left them there as the engine was running smoothly with no problems. That engine had been worked on before we noticed.

Thanks for reply ill do that but been held up today got the wrong rear plate gasket
