Sprint exhaust stainless or mild steel

#1 Post by white dolly sprint »

Hi
My mild steel exhaust has just started blowing on the nearside box and was wondering if anyone has any experience with the stainless exhausts between the stannard and sports exhaust systems.
Is one quieter than the other and is any much louder than a standard mild steel system.
Can anyone recommend the best place to purchase stainless or mild steel second hand or new.
Thanks
Mike.

All I can tell you is I fitted a new Rimmers stainless system back in 2015 and 10 years and 20,000miles later it is still as quiet as the day it was fitted. I've had other mild steel systems made locally and fitted to other Dolomites / Sprints and they have all been noisier than this SS one. I was able to buy this SS one when they had a sale on and that did help with the costs. Geoff

Hi Geoff thanks for the reply.
Was that a standard system or what they call a sports system that you had .

Hi Matt
Do you know if the club exhausts are made by the same suppliers as the trade sellers and are they any different.
Do they do a sorts version or is it just the standard system for the sprint

Thanks for the replies
Is there anyone who has the sports exhaust from rimmer brothers fitted and if so, how long have you had it and is it very load or booming sound on motorways / faster roads. I have read about some members with the straight throw more free flowing exhaust system and was wondering if it how much louder it is

I have 2 of them! 1 is on the car that has replaced the Carledo, The exhaust has been adapted to the Vauxhall downpipe, the tailpipe is cut short for the "short tail" car and it's been in service since 2012 with around 60k miles covered. During that time the sound quality hasn't altered noticeably, but it is and always has been quite loud at motorway cruising speeds. On that manual car which is stripped out inside for track use, I haven't worried that it's not the quietest. However on car number 2, my automatic Sprint, also Vauxhall powered, it booms quite badly and annoyingly at sustained cruise around 3000rpm. You cant hear yourself THINK. Let alone hear the fancy stereo! On a car that is designed and engineered as a long distance cruiser, it's beyond annoying. So much so that i'm going to visit a stainless exhaust supplier and get them to make me a replacement front silencer that ISN'T a straight through, in an attempt to shut it up a bit! Must be getting old!

My experiences of fitting a sports exhaust (several times) is the frustration of getting it to fit in the first place and then having to adjust the fit several times thereafter to stop it hitting the floor pan/axle/prop shaft as the back of the car rises and falls with everyday driving. Probably easier if you have access to a ramp, I didn't. On one occasion I resorted to assembling it off the car on the ground and then measuring/adjusting to prove myself that it could fit as that one was so bad at first attempt the over axle section wanted to come out from under the nearside cill!

I second all this^^^^^^^!

Not only have I fitted the 2 on my own cars but several for customers too and yes, they fit where they touch, or touch wherever you fit them!

It is POSSIBLE to make them fit properly but you need patience and a willingness to cut chunks off! In my experience the whole thing is about 4-6" too long, this excess spread between all the pieces!

Some news, I heard recently that Mark Field (ex Jigsaw racing) is developing a sports exhaust of his own design for Dolomite models. Maybe that one will fit better! From what I hear there will also be a choice of tailpipe designs.
