The OHV Challenge

#1 Post by Jon Tilson »

Disclaimer; For the purpose of clarity it must be noted that this proposed event has not been organised by the Triumph Dolomite Club, which is not registered with the RACMSA and is not permitted to run motorsports events independently.

This is a place holder for someone to organise an ohv v anything slant challenge to be held on a Saturday sometime before June next year at some airfield or track.

The intention will be to see if an ohv car can produce slant 4 performance.

Volunteers for organisational skills and ideas required and it should be open to all cars of vaguely "small michellotti" triumph origin.

It's going to be expensive just for the TDC to organise an airfield. I vaguely recall there's a group on the Pistonheads forum who do this sort of think, perhaps Lewis knows something?

Depending on how much room you think you'll need, you could do this...

Simple trip to Santa Pod for a RWYB day?

I'd try and go with my Brooklands Sprint. It's only got a Stainless Sports exhaust and leccy ignition I think

RWYB's great fun but for something like this, I don't think it's suitable, unless you have the same person driving each car - 'performance' varies too much from driver to driver.

I'll dig up the stuff I had about field hire tomorrow, when I wake up......Been teaching small children to do wheel changes on our Formula Student car all day at the Imagineering fair, plus giving people guided tours of our Evo. Good laugh though :)

I dont give a flying f@@k if x car is faster than y car, a standard sprint would be quicker than a standard 40 year old fwd. what would this prove?

If someone wants to modify their small engined car let them, if another person wants to put a 1300 engine in a sprint shell let the do that too

the only thing a race would prove is that you have nothing better to do, saying that i could arrange a large empty suitable strip any sunday that im not working.

Just to be clear, the challenge is to see if a well set up OHV is a match for a standard sprint?

This sounds real interesting. Sundays are good for me too, this I have to watch.

Actually, for clarification there are going to be a number of challenges and sub-challenges.

I believe that firstly there is to be a benchmark session where a standard 1300, 1500 and 1850 are pitted against each other, more to find reference points than anything else.

Then the main challenge will be whether a well prepared ohv can see off Mr Tilson's TR7 engined 1850HL. I believe that this will involve a Toledo with suitably modified 1500 running gear. (Dollyboy enter stage left).

A 1300 with longer gearing and twin SU's is to be put into the mix somewhere (probably against a 1500HL).

I hope to bring a modified 1300 Toledo to the party, to see how that gets on.

This is less about what is faster than what than it is about comparing the relative performances of differing variations on the Dolomite theme. The basic tenet is whether an ohv car can be reasonably cheaply and simply prepared (mostly using a parts bin approach), and thus done give a slant four a run for its money.

Finally, I believe that there has been a suggestion that an appropriately more extremely modified 1500ohv can see off a Sprint (and remain vaguely reliable doing it). Suitable vehicles permitting, this will also be investigated.

That is my interpretation of "the Challenge". I may be wrong. Whatever it promises to be a good fun and interesting day out and no doubt some tall stories will be told in the pub afterwards (not least by me!).

May seems to be a favourite time at the moment.
Martin.

Ta Martin

Sundays 4, 11 and 18 May 2008 now reserved, I hope it can be one of those. Don't think Mrs Weevil would be too impressed with this as a day out on the 25th, that's our wedding anniversary

Sorry...

I wont be able to do a Sunday...

Thats whay I asked for a Saturday in the 1st place.

May bank holidays are also a possibility....
as also is a long summer evening...

Central location will also be most convenient. Lincolnshire, while abounding in airfields, is a bit far for us southern types.

Democratic or not there's not a lot of point in going ahead if the main protagonist cannot be there. First May bank holiday? Can 1300dolly get the strip on a BH Monday?

...main protagonist...
Is he? I thought he was defending...?

I hope all of this isn't based on Jod's 'Eddy' keeping virtually with my Sprint KDU at the lights in Dudley on the magical mystery tour onto the last TDCIR held at Cosford, for if it is we were both equally hung over on the morning after my birthday... as was KDU, running on three together with a badly blocked fuel filter...

..... more to do with passing Steve Wilkes, 2-up on the M40 on the way to Gaydon at 120 (KPH, obviously). I've never claimed that EDY would keep with a Sprint from a standing start because it wouldn't.

well i dont work saturdays or sundays, except 2nd may bank holiday, so whatever is fine by me.

I'll be happy to go anywhere within say 150miles of derby, any further and the trip back via tow rope [if she blows] really wouldnt be fun.

of course thats not likely to happen, gloria will be fine, she will survive.

I think martin is pretty much on the money with what this is all about, although im not certain whether jods motor was implied as 'parts bin' approach, or the more radical 1500. i think the spec of edy's motor is a bit further up the evolutionary scale.

regardless, should be fun... shame my sprint wont be done, i'd like to stick that up against marts track car

PS no doubt from a standing start, a well set up strong standard sprint (eg Adams) vs the tolo with edy motor, even bearing in mind the tolo is what, 150kgs lighter? sprint will be far stronger from 30-40mph up to 100, poor gloria will have her work cut out, but i dont think she would be badly embarrassed. jod - we have tuning to do...
