Hi all, I've recently become the proud owner of LFY 375R, a blue/rust '76 Sprint automatic. When I bought the car the temperature gauge wasn't working so I replaced the sender unit immediately, now the gauge works but sits between 3/4 and H.
So far I've removed the 'stat (which was 88 deg.) and from what I can tell there's plenty of coolant flow through the motor & no airlocks. The engine seems to run just fine when hot but I'm going to check the voltage to the sender unit is not going wayward as I think the regulator is on it's way (lights "pulsing" with engine running) and flush the cooling system tomorrow anyway.
I was just wondering where any other Sprint owner's temp. gauge needle sits when warm and if there's anything else likely to cause hot running?
Cheers, Dan.
EDIT-: Oh by the way, if someone could also tell me the correct ignition timing angle it would be much appreciated too.
is the fuel gauge accurate? both gauges share their feed through the stabiliser.
Whats the radiator like?
Is the fuel mixture weak?
Is the timing too far advanced?
i have had a variety of sprints and they generally have run at the half way mark. They have crept towards three quarters in traffic or similar. At three quarters a fan either kicks in (for the ones running kenlowes) or panic kicks in.
Is your fan working?
You checked the amount of coolant right?
Oh and is this when standing or while the car is moving?

Thanks for the replies, I think I might not be in quite as much bother as I thought I was. The fuel gauge over-reads by nearly a quarter and the mixture was waaaaaaay lean as well. Ignition timing has only been done static also so I'll borrow a strobe ASAP & sort that.
David6214, The car has a thermo-viscous fan at the moment & coolant level/mixture is fine (or was until I sheared a 'stat housing bolt! Drill time tomorrow... )
The temperature reading stayed pretty much constant whether moving or stood still and the rad was hot all over after a short run indicating good flow (I think ) this is what's made me feel that it may be a sender/gauge/stabiliser problem.

Thanks again, Dan.
That does sound like a stabiliser problem if both fuel and temp are over-reading. The club does a nice electronic one.
