Another advocate of the old plus gas.

I tried wd-40 once on a landy bumper bolt. Soaked it for days and it still sheered off.

Used plus gas on the other side. Let it soak a few hours and out it came.

I use NOTHING else now. Unbeatable stuff

At last, got rid of the Sprint this morning. It's now in the spray shop sat next to a MK1 Escort, similarly paint free.





Spent all afternoon lapping in valves, I've done 8 so far. not my favourite job.

I find duck oil to be as good as plus gas. Wd 40 is not a penetrating oil and should not be used as one.

not that that should be a surprise, but it is bloody encouraging that I'm on the right track.

On the penetrating fluids, my old man swore by "penetrene", has a really distinctive smell that flashes me back to my childhood. That's what I'm using. I'll look out for plusgas.

Nooo! It's just that it's been sitting in the garage like that for the last 3-4 weeks & not progressing. Now I can get on with rebuilding the engine & cleaning/painting lots of parts.

I finished off lapping the other 8 valves this morning & just finished stripping cleaning & rebuilding the rocker shaft components. I also mic'd up all the shims. I noticed when measuring the valve clearances that the exhausts all came in around the 0.015" mark so I assume someone had done this deliberately; odd?

Blimey you are patient Mart. I'm pretty sure you only need to lap until you have a continuous band of shiny silver however narrow. I've never lapped until the entire seat width is there.

I've always lapped my valves to that extent Julian, afaik that's how it's supposed to be done? but I could be wrong! It's actually matt grey not shiny silver.

I think like many things car related there are two schools of thought on lapping valves in. No idea which is right, though personally I have never gone that mad.

Got the head on & did the valve timing during the week & also managed to bling a few bits & pieces today.
