Re: Newguys Sprint Conversion
quite easily I found. There is a special tool for the job but I found a combination of sockets to act as holders and a drift worked well. 3/4" drive sockets were ideal since they allowed the shaft to pass through but held the cage etc. The workshop manual has a decent enough run through how to seperate them and reassemble them. You will need a water pump overhaul kit (sprintparts or vanguard wholesalers, about $70AU) which includes all the O rings, a new bearing, graphite seal (the new ones are actually metal) and a few other bits like the circlip). A bit of patience and it is an enjoyable job. Don't force the graphite seal back on, it is held in position by a shoulder and forcing it will damage the seal.I have found another old water pump with a good shaft, but stuffed seals and bearing.
How do these come apart?

Re: Newguys Sprint Conversion
Cheers Stu, i am looking at having it professionally rebuilt, i have found a good shaft to use and they would charge me around $150NZ
For parts and labour. I thought would be about right. I might have a crack at it myself, but i don't want it to be a fault.
Anyway here are some update pics.
Painted my flywheel as it was covered in surface rust, then i just removed the paint where the clutch plate sits.

And Mount up on the Block.

Timing cover still removed as i am still not happy with the tensioner

As you can see the block all re hammered back up

And my last decent mission was putting the gearbox onto the motor, i must have had the clutch plate pretty right as she just slide on.
heavy all this on your own though. (Pics pretty overboard as i was pretty happy)

Booster all painted up, looks spanking

HammerRite, Best paint for these jobs i reckon.
Another question, will my Gearbox tunnel shifter location be right?
I know you guys think it might be a tight fit but i think i should be able to hammer it right.

As the car is stripped I take it.................
You have already removed the tunnel, Stew?
If so, remove gearstick from the box.
Next, fit the engine and box to your car.
Then trial fit the tunnel.
It should then be clear if it will do or not.

Re: Newguys Sprint Conversion
well ive been poking around most nights doing small thing
Ive decided to send my waterpump away to have it recond, and my radiator is getting its fins fixed, and the tanks taken off and receiving
a well needed clean out. he thinks my idea of having my new 12inch fan on the radiator and running a 10 to blow over the block exhaust is a great idea.
I have rubbed down and degreased the tunnel cover, Painted the gearbox mount, Master Brake Cylinder, starter and solenoid, alternator,
water pump cover.
Also scraped the manifold gasket off, as well as the water pump cover gasket, they were stuck on there good.
Rubbed them down so there is nothing sitting on the seals.
Fitted the exhaust last night to check if it clears everything, thinking about heat wrapping it to remove some more heat from the engine bay.
Can you fit the motor with this on?
Got engine oil, Brake Fluid And Gearbox oil.
Also repainted the patch we did on the chassis at the front so it looks a little better not the right color but im not fussed.
Few pics

Re: Newguys Sprint Conversion
It'll go in fine with the downpipe attached. At least it came out fine with the downpipe attached.

Re: Newguys Sprint Conversion
I have never taken it out with the downpipe attached cause i can never get the bolts out.
A small point..............
Stew, you have fitted the alternator's upper bolt from the front. This is the way the engines always had the alternator attached, but with the engine in situ, to remove the alternator you must first remove the radiator ( as the long bolt won't come out fully). If it will clear the water pump cover try fitting the bolt from the back?

Re: Newguys Sprint Conversion
If its a 12 vane housing it should clear the pump casting.

I will turn this around.
Thanks for pointing it out mate.
Re: Newguys Sprint Conversion
Last night i fitted up the Brake Booster and master cylinder.
Was actually dreding the job as the nuts on the top are such a prick to get on.
Also painted the stat housing and fitted the spin on converter.

Re: Newguys Sprint Conversion
Looking good there Stew. Just one thing though - I don't fancy being in the way if that engine and box fall off the table. It would be a lot safer on the floor, even if it is harder to work on.

Re: Newguys Sprint Conversion
Just got my radiator back.
I was there after he took the tank off and she was pretty clean etc.
He did check them anyway, fixed the fins were the Mechanical fan had hit, and sprayed it.
