The body man is always the skillful and costly guy in this process. Everything else can be learned at home through, time, effort and mistakes!

Not trying to take away from Marts sterling work (or indeed my own there)

Good job so far!

Absolutely correct Alan. That's one area I leave to the professionals. I can weld a few plates here & there but to prep the bodywork for spraying is a long & sometimes, laborious job.

Hmmm! not sure. I could do with a rest. But if a nice Brooklands or Sapphire came along...I may be interested.

Out of interest, Mart, would you mind revealing what the prep & paint has cost? Making such slow progress with mine (i.e. 2 years since it last moved under its own power :( ) that sending it away to come back mint is getting really tempting.

Hi James.

The only prepping we did (Mary stripped the paint off half of the car) was to strip it down to the shell, strip the paint off & weld in a few plates. Then it got towed to the sprayers. The prep & spray job will be £2700. It's been there for about 10 weeks now and counting.

Thanks Mart, that's probably a bit over my budget at the moment, although I really just want it blown over, not so worried about the engine bay / door shuts at this point.

Prep CAN all be done yourself, and to a high standard. I did my Land rover myself for instance.

Biggest problem is that it takes so much time that boredom sets in and shortcuts get taken.

I spent 37 hours just sanding the rear tub arear of the land rover!!!

Basically, you pay a body man so much because he is doing the boring work.

The painting itself takes next to no time.
